It's pretty simple to clean the contacts, you've done the hard work. Put the unit on a work bench get the from cover off. Use a clean pencil eraser and spin it on the contacts. I then used a q tip and rubbing alchol to clean them. Reverse your steps and wala I saved you a few hundred bucks.

HI Jim! Did you get your unit repaired? I have had the HVAC control unit out 5 times trying to find the problem and today I finally repaired the unit myself...same problem you were having. Turns out there were two solder points in a long line of points that had let go on the board where the board plugs into the front face control panel. I could get the system to work if I rocked the control panel back and forth and pushed it in and out or hit the sides of the enclosure where the control unit sits. Heated up the soldering iron and melted the existing solder slightly and that was it! No more erratic weird disfunction!

I have the same issue with my '93. Just not brave enough yet to try and remove the unit.
