War Games, is my runaway favourite episode of Space 1999, tight action, thought provoking plot, solid direction by a great director more famous for comedy- Charles Crighton.

Important sequence (plus other S1999 fx scenes ) because it inspired or provided a benchmark for George Lucas to create the space dogfights in Star Wars. I read that waaay back in the 70s. I can well believe it. 🙂

I’m actually surprised, given the back story of Space 1999, that there wasn’t a complement of Hawks stationed on Moonbase Alpha.😎✌️

A lot of good questions below, some of which I have seen answered elsewhere. The 3 Hawks that were stationed at the Space Station destroyed in Breakaway were destroyed along with it. The Hawks have a great advantage in speed and armament over the Eagles, but are not as maneuverable, and Carter is a fantastic pilot who also qualified on the Hawk, and it's he that gets both the Hawk kills.

The Eagle and Hawk are some of my favorite designs in SF television. There's just so much that's right about them.
The Eagle is, more or less, a Sikorsky Skycrane in space. The exterior of the cockpit suggests there are windows at the pilots' feet, which would be useful for a vehicle that hovers precisely. Hawk doesn't need this, and doesn't have it. AFAIK the Eagle's cockpit set doesn't have windows there, but I'm not sure we'd ever see them.
There's a lot of common features between the two; just look at them and you can see they were designed by the same people.
Gotta wonder why the Hawks didn't launch their missiles, though.
