Budget-Friendly Gardening! #homesteading #gardeningtips

This may not be the advice coming from most gardening guru’s but when we started planting large gardens, we were on a super tight budget with very little space in our small suburban home.

But we did have a sunny, south facing window! So we squeezed as much as we could in front of it and harnessed the power of the sun.

And it worked!

Now, I’d certainly not be selling these seedlings at any spring garden sales but for feeding our family, they worked great!

With our primary goal being to feed our family year round, much of what we grow are root veggies, dent corn, beans, winter squash, all of which we direct sow.

But, for the extra things (tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cabbage, brussels, broccoli) this method has served us well!

And if you think it’s too late…we just planted ours this week 🙄😉.

Most seed starting mixes are used indoors in domes just like you show. That's why they usually don't have high-organic ingredients like compost in them, because it contributes to damping off diseases that kill seedlings in that super-high humidity environment. Experienced gardeners use standard seed starting mixes which are lower in organics, containing things like peat, perlite, coco fiber, vermiculite, etc.

Not being rude with this comment so please don’t take it that way. You are mixing store bought products you purchased to start your seeds vs “making”

It would be helpful to society if you explained your mix, what seeds worked well with that mix and what seeds had issues with your mix. Then next year, what mix you used to fix the seeds that had issues with this mix.

For example, after 5 years of experience I have dialed in my mix for tomatoes, squash, cucumbers etc. I share my experience with my local community and have helped my community grow tomatoes like I do using my process based on years of experience and success.
