I agree with your take on the SU-57 pilot missing the missile lock... That's something I noticed too. In fairness, maybe the pilot knew he was about to punch it and fired on the F-14 as a last act of defiance. Great video.

That was a very interesting commentary to listen to for me (non_US, non English native speaker^^) and very understandable, thank you. The thing that made that fight believable for me was that Maverick had surprise on his side (and plot umbrella, of course). even I know (and that is saying something ^^) that the US has not had F14ies in use for some time, the other pilots could not have guessed that there was someone in the seat who actually knew what he was doing - and doing it very well.

About Su-57. At the moment the Su-57 is based on two airfields, the first is training and the second is research. In fact, the Su-57 has not reached combat readiness, it is still being developed. They are not in service, they are not performing combat missions (don't believe all sorts of media that say it is used in combat operations). In fact, the 20 Su-57s we have now are still test vehicles. Radar, avionics, all these sensors, data exchange network, all these are very complex technologies that Russia is having a hard time mastering. The difficulty is not only in production, but also in software.
Moreover, at the moment only one missile is ready for it, the R-74, a short-range missile. The medium-range missile, the R-77M, is still being tested (the older versions of the R-77 do not fit in the compartment). The long range missile is also not ready, now it has the code name Izdelie 810.

If we talk about the opinion of pilots who managed to fly the Su-57 (I heard on one stream as a pilot talked about the Su-57, without details). They say that this is a completely different machine, nothing in common with the Su-27 based machines. They compare the transition from the Su-35 to the Su-57 as the transition from a typewriter to a laptop. The computer does all the work and the pilot has become the operator of the machine.

I feel like they were really doing a disservice to the R73's the SU57's were firing, they are objectively advanced missiles, and those 6'oclock shots that maverick flared off when the seeker head of the missile had a nice big engine to look at while also having infrared counter counter measures is a real stretch of reality (in my opinion)
