I used to absolutely HATE this 80s tone

I can’t seem to get enough of 80s Strat tones these days. From cleaner, percussive out of phase sounds (like what you’ll hear in this video) to the bigger chorus’d out compressed sounds (upcoming video), they just fit in a mix SO well. And I used to absolutely loathe these sounds. Now, I use them to great effect in my day to day job of playing guitar on songs. So, here’s what I have today: Subscriber Dan wrote a bunch of songs back in the 80s and is now revisiting them by having others such as myself add value by recording new parts and/or re-recording his parts. This song modulates back and forth between Gm and G. The song sounds country/western/folk with hints of pop and a Latin feel (minor key with a dominant 5 chord) and 1980s sensibilities throughout. I decided a cool cleanish Strat with some reverb and delay reminiscent of Wicked Game (YES that is an 80s Strat tone! It was recorded in '89, mind you) would fit well. That and a tremolo'd baritone give this track the imagery of two band guys playing their own parts. Who knew those things could live together? PS: I’m hearing the Strat track more “wet” than presented; as with most tracks I play, I try not to commit the mix engineer to high reverb and delay levels that may interfere with his or her job. Enjoy!

I was in high school during the early ’80s, in Southern California. Those Strat tones mean a lot to me — even tho' I've never been much of a Strat player. Thanks for bringing ’em back.

In my head, wicked game was a gretsch. I bought a 4 thousand dollar white falcon... Didn't get me quite there... Then I read it was done on a strat. I already had several strats. DOH!!!

After watching the chord trick video, you kind of answered the question about the end of my song ending in the major G, like you said how the major chord is positive, when she said oh no not me, that was her being strong and positive and telling the guy to hit the road, she’d had enough of his lies

The chord progression and melody is so cool and Justin your note choices are always so clean and inspiring man. Loved this.

I've missed the baritone. Looove these overdub sessions.

Keeping the fade out major is a nice touch. It's also cool to try to think about it unresolved.

The walkups really remind me of Johnny Lee's "Lookin' For Love". I can't unhear it. This also sounds like it could have been in Pulp Fiction, haha

That is super cool seeing you in action. Loved the part where you decided to “play around” the existing line.

I don’t know if it’s just me but with the lyrics I just felt like a female would be singing this song. Maybe that’s dated thinking.

Yeah Man ... Strats can be kind of addictive ... Not my main tool ... but I would never get rid of my Strat ... different way of playing. Excellent video Justin! 👍👍👍

I would have loved to have heard the baritone with some vibrato on it...
Loved what you did with the Strat, especially in the solo portion.

That was great. Definitely could have been a hit on 80s radio. As a songwriter, I’d end it on Gmaj7. But if this were an 80s production it would gently fade out…
