the story behind this song (adam told this at dodie concert):
when he was growing up, there was an old car that was always parked in his driveway. no one ever drove it, it was just always there. one day, when he was six, he looked out the window and the car was gone. he went downstairs to tell his parents good job for finally selling it and they said “yeah it’s gone, , i think someone stole it.” and they said they were impressed that they even got it out of the driveway because it could barely run. about 45 minutes later, the police arrive with the car saying that they found it on the side of the road and that they were returning it back to them. his parents were like “do we really have to take it back?”
it was much funnier when adam told it but i thought everyone should know the backstory for this song

*Adam talking about the story of his parents car that they didn’t really want getting stolen* “I know I’ve only been here for 6 years... but I don’t think this is how adults are supposed to act”

You'd think his songs would've blown off already but nope! People are missing out.

I see a lot comment sharing the literal story that was the inspiration for this song but don't see many people sharing the symbolic meaning that Adam had for this song. He said that while writing this and bringing back memories from his childhood, it made him think a lot about the divorce of his parents. Losing the car is mean to be symbolic for the loss of his family being together. He said about the situation at the time he didn't feel that upset when the divorce happened, but in retrospect he wishes he could have enjoyed the "family" he had while it was still together. A lot of the song eludes to how his parents knew that their marriage was failing but didn't do much to try to stop it (leaving the windows cracked/keys on the dash)

So back in like the early 00s my parents were gifted (by 2 anonymous people from our church) a minivan. At the time my family and i (5 kids, pregnant mom, dad working like a dog getting paid very little) didnt have a car. We were taking a bus or walking everywhere. It was hard but we did it. We didnt ask for a car, we didnt expect to be given one. It just showed up one day. I still remember looking through the windows on the day we got it and being so excited it had a cd and cassette player.
We had that car for 17 years. The a/c most of the time didnt worked, none of the windows rolled down, and it made the worst noise ever, but it didnt give up on us until we could afford another car. Ik it was God who sent that car to us, and even tho we havent had it in 6 years, it still makes me wanna cry thinking about that lovable piece of junk. People look down on crappy beat up cars, but i cant. Without that old car we would have kept taking the bus everywhere. My family has never had money, but God has always taken care of us.
I absolutely love this song for reminding me of that car and what it represented for my family.

this is exactly how I feel right now, just ended a long relationship that was like "stolen" because we did leave it unguarded, as if we didn't care anymore, it was just there because of time. but even if you're not in love anymore is always hard to let it go, maybe you try but the other person is "afraid to gonna crash", and at a certain point you give up. "maybe letting go isn't so bad", it's difficult to accept this but it is true. and the joyride, when you try to take the last crumbs, even if it is a poor consolation. I think that Adam Melchor was just pure genius to make a metaphor like that, even if only talking about a car he managed to convey all my emotions, and I'm sure he lived a similar experience, as for many of us. this song is poetry and it hurts every time, I can't stop listening to it

This song hit me hard at a recent show in ATL so I'm stoked to have a nice, clean studio version to obsess over and play repeatedly 😊

I didn't even know about Adam until I saw him in concert opening for Noah Kahan in Madison, WI. And honestly Adam stole the show!!! Everyone's jaws dropped to the floor as soon as he started singing. I should've gotten more footage but I was just in awe. Some people say that live performances can be disappointing but Adam live is SO DAMN GOOD!!! I think it's even better than the studio versions. I plan on seeing him again when he swings this way in February. ❤️❤️❤️ instant fan.
