Great video. Taking my PE in 2 days and Masonry was one thing I knew almost nothing about. This was very helpful!

I’m taking my PE test soon and have been watching tons of your videos, I love how you manage to make the time spent studying more enjoyable than it otherwise should be! Thank you!

Wouldn't the effective length (Le) be 13'? Beam supports have to be H/2 from center of support to the opening from my understanding, so that would be an additional 1' at each end of the "beam" to add to the "effective length". I am a little confused as to how to determine the effective length if it is not already provided in the question. I know its only an additional foot or two, but I want to clarify the solving process for myself since there's a disconnect on my end. Thanks!

to get the self weight of the beam shouldn’t it be multipled by width and not the depth?

Any good masonry textbook recommendations?

The reference manual is of course has everything you need, but is not the easiest thing to navigate.

A good textbook with step-by-step procedures and examples is always appreciated.

Rich: was wondering if you could do some OOP masonry wall design examples?

I also believe I fudged up the max reinforcing - more to come

I'm taking a PPI review class. A steel example states to use strength design. Is strength design with steel referring to ASD or LRFD? Thanks for any assistance

why does this example mention "beam is laterally braced at both ends" is this info useful for something? and at google it appears "vertical reinforcement" for cmu beams, so did we have to check for that too?
