Welcome to another devlog about my upcoming rogulike deckbuilder called Castlemancer. I've made some previous devlogs about Castlemancer, but there have been so many iterations between devlogs, its hard to keep up!

Anyway, this devlog covers a realization that I had with some of the new features I've added to Castlemancer. In essence, I tried to spice up my card-play mechanics, to make the act of playing an actual card more impactful. This combined with my current spell and summon system has basically created a pixel art version of the game card wars from the TV show Adventure Time.

Now Adventure Time is a fantastic show, especially the Card Wars episode. Basically, Finn and Jake play a 3d card game, that when a card is played, a hologram pops up on the game board. The new features I've added to Castlemancer feel very similar to this, except in 2d. Where you play cards, but instead of just the content of the card mattering, the actual act of playing the card in-game has an effect (similar to Adventure Time's Card Wars).

Wishlisted! I cannot wait to see what you add next. The only thing is that I imagine it could be a bit awkward to aim given that the cards obscure whatever they're targeting lol

Wow this is brilliant!!

Only tweak is that "neutral" and "active" maybe aren't the most intuitive packaging. Maybe something like Strike for single strong actions (when the card has a vertical orientation, like a ⚡) and Barrage for ongoing actions (when the card has a horizontal orientation)?
