Is Bandung the perfect place to live in Indonesia?

Following our dream of a travel day on the Bullet Train in our last video, we found ourselves in Bandung, known for it's volcanoes, tea plantations, and relatively cool tropical climate.

In this video we go out for a walk to see what we can find in this town, dropping by Braga to take a peek at the shopping scene here.

We really enjoyed our time in Bandung and it was refreshing to have cooler weather during our time. Would you live in Bandung?

Thanks for watching! Share this with a friend you want to take on an Indonesia trip soon!

Much love,

Jacob and Emma

Vacation spots in Bandung are scattered in the north and south. You’ve got cafes at the top of the hills in Dago and Lembang, Kawah Putih, craters, plus strawberry and tea plantations, and hot springs in Ciwidey.

Bandung is surrounded by mountains, so it’s known for its veggie-based food, making it pretty vegetarian-friendly.

The locals in West Java are Sundanese, and the text at the museum was in Sundanese, not Indonesian.

The writing on the wall is in the Sundanese ethnic language, which is still used today as a communication tool among Sundanese people, especially in West Java province. Sundanese is the second-largest ethnic group in Indonesia after the Javanese. Bandung is the capital of West Java, and its main ethnic group is Sundanese. Every province in Indonesia has its own ethnic language.

9:45 indeed it's teh talua.. which litterally means "egg tea".. so no wonder when you said it's similar to egg coffee. Typically this kind of drink I believe is originated from west sumatra and you can find anywhere wherever there's padang/minang restaurant or little shop. Because the shop (kedai pak ciman) you visited is specialized in west sumatran food. I know because my office is just a few buildings from it.

I'm a native here so I'll translate as much as I can the passage found in the monument in case someone haven't. Mind you, English is not my first language so I might botched the translation here.

This is the one found in 2:45 using formal Sundanese.

"A land that blessed, a sky that gifted. It is all for you, as present from those lived before you. Those who work hard to construct, those who pray to protect. A land where wind sings through the bamboo leaves. Where people blossoms with joy and laughter, like the water flow through the rock so clear. It is the heritage, surrounded by Si Awat-Awat desert, guarded by Salak Mountain, watched by Tangkuban Parahu. Young souls, the time is now for you to recieve this historical relic. Go forward hand in hand tight, with the power bestowed by Him all your path, may all your dreams come true. Wave the flags high through all the storms, because there'll be a dawn breaking from your shoulder to the new horizon in the new era."

And here's the COVID-19 tribute found in 6:45

"The COVID-19 pandemics has destroyed the world's life foundation, with Indonesia and especially West Java being a non-exceptions. The synergy that we build towards our goal to sustain with all the collaborative effort of struggle and hope to fight said pandemics, is the leading force for West Java to stand on our feet towards the future. This monument is dedicated as the tribute to the warriors who passed away while serving their humanity mission duty, as well as the determination of West Java citizens who were able to stay strong through the crisis. 'We stayed strong despite the pandemics, we stayed grow with our willpower' - Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java"

That's the approximate translation of each passage in the monument.

Okay so, allow me to explain some things that you might be missing.
1. Jakarta is in fact always been the capital of indonesia since the dutch era (batavia) but soon to be changed though since we are in a process of building the new capital city. And culturally west java and jakarta are different. West java are the home for the sundanese tribe which the language was seen at the video (the one you didn't understand) and jakarta is the home for the betawi tribe speaking mainly betawinese.
2. Gedung sate is the office for the governor of west java so you actually was inside a governor palace.
3. There's a famous dutch bakery in braga street where they still serve items all the way since the colonials time.
4. Bandung is in literal crater of an ancient mountain and it used to be a lake. So it explains the cool breeze that you have in bandung
So there you go, it might not be all because I'm not living in bandung but as fellow west javan citizen i think i can give a little insight of our provincial capital. Oh and by the way you guys should definitely visit jogjakarta since it's the only monarchy (yes monarchy) under a republic state.

Bandung actually the paradise for streets food, thematic garden and hill tours, and Clothing especially Tshirt and jeans, they're so many boutiqe and Distro, i recommend you to buy some, they're good quality fabric, stunning design and cheap.
little thing about the city they're tons of creativity people, in 90's many famous music bands, vocalists and artists were born there. Explore it guys...👍, i promise it won't be enough to explore it all in one day.

FYI The writing on the monument is in sundanese ethnic/ tribe language, In Fact: there are 583 languages and dialects spoken by the different ethnic groups in Indonesia.
Indonesia people use Bahasa Indonesia language as their national language to communicate and unite people across Indonesia, because every indonesia region has its own language,
I would say Bahasa Indonesia is like "mini-english", we use english to communicate with people from different countries, but in indonesia they use Bahasa to communicate with indonesian people from different region, so at least most of indonesia people they speak minimum 2 languages (1 Ethnic/ tribe Language + 1 Bahas Indonesia) and also they can speak english but in various level, even in the same island of java from jakarta (Betawi Ethic), West Java (Sundanese Ethnic), Cetral Java to East Java (Javanese Ethnic) they speak totally different languanges and they use Bahasa to communicate with each other, even myself, i was born and raised as sundanese i have to use bahasa when I visit jakarta or central java to communicate with people, but when i visit bandung i can use sundanese language because they can understand it :)
but now in this modern era some indonesian people can speak 3 or 4 languages and cross-cultural marriage become one of the factors, e.g. their parents are coming from different ethic/ tribe so their kids can speak different ethic languages, and enjoy your trip! Cheers :)

Jakarta has its own special provincial region called Daerah Khusus Ibukota/DKI (Special Capital Region) which is only one city and will be change to DK (Special Region) since Indonesia is moving the Capital city to Nusantara in Kalimantan (Borneo Island).

The sentences in the Monument is not Bahasa Indonesia, even if you are a master in Bahasa Indonesia you will not be able to translated them because they are in "Sundanese" which is the local West Java language.
