Woodturning - A Square Bowl in English Oak

This week two projects. The first is my version of the Hex Nut Glue Block, inspired by Mike Waldts two recent videos on the subject. I think I reinvented the faceplate, but at a cost of about £2 each.

I was asked to make a Square Bowl for a birthday present. I found Al Furtado’s (The Rebel Turner) recent Youtube video in which he turned a Square Bevelled Bowl, which inspired me to try something similar.

It did not go according to plan and some on-the-fly design changes were necessary! However, the outcome was better than had anticipated so I count this as a win!

Firstly I want to tank you for the credit but mostly I want to congratulate you not only a great tutorial and for covering all the possible draw backs that you encountered
I love the black rim.
Thank you again...

Very nice William, I am inspired to have a go. I have an English oak sleeper which I could assemble into a larger piece for the top. Thanks again, Bill (my Mother only called me William when I was naughty but that was 70 years ago or so).

Interesting bowl. I like it. Glad you still have your adult. I lost mine some time ago. I follow in his footsteps as being able to turn my hand to many things, alas not all very well! He would be pleased to think I am now trying hard to be a good(ish) woodturner. Regards, Mike

youtube searching don't you love it? hehe. We are now able to get all the information we require at the `flick of the mouse`. Of course absorbing that information is something else. I like the precaution of the "yellow tape" too.
I make pottery on the wheel! and your craft and mine have a few similarities which has glued me to the screen watching your's [and others] incredible art forms. Thank you for sharing this with us William. [cliff from london].

Re the use of a NUT, if you look inside the back of your wood turning chucks, you will see that there are two registers, one is the size of the bar before the thread is cut, and the other is the face register to fit the mandrill, as you are just using the threads you are not fully fitting the nut to the mandrill register, the way around this is to measure you lathe mandrill and set the nut into you black of wood, in order to make a good register to the headstock mandrill. you will see in your proper chucks that the threads are removed for this purpose. always have safety in mind when making your own chucks. hope all this makes sense, be safe and enjoy your turning.
