I found this series on VHS at a garage sale when i was a kid and i was obsessed with this opening and series even though i didn’t understand a lick of Japanese and it had no subtitles

You know what makes this opening particularly special? That it spoils almost all the main events without spoiling them at all. Apart from appearanced of Seigram and Gaav for example, it shows more even more, leaving out the context.

0:37 Gourry imprisonned in crystal that breaks - reference to Lina's fight with Phibrizzo who threatened to kill her friends. And directly afterwards Lina is in grief of losing him.

0:40 Sword of Light engulfing in shadows to create Laguna Blade.

0:44 Usually something like this in the opening is totally random, but Gaav and Xellos *did* actually have a fight. Normally You see fights of random characters in openings, but this one isn't random at all.

0:46 No sure, but if it's Sylphiel who throws Dragon Slave (could be just random generic spell, though), then it's also a hidden spoiler. It might be reference and generic look could be a way to hide tha tit's Dragon Slave, but I dunno. She learns this spell in the series, which even shocks Lina.

0:49 And Phibrizzo just as a boy, foreshadowing the whole thing.

0:58 Luna Inverse, sister of Lina.

0:59 Laguna Blade again.

1:01 And this is even bigger. Lord of Nightmares in Lina's body shown in the opening. Without a context it looks like power up for Lina or just random stuff. But anyone who watched knows that this is not random animation at all, but a big event that concludes the second main arc.

1:05 Not sure, but weren't something like that in show too? I remember that they had a karaoke contest, but not sure if dancing too?

1:14 Also Zelas Metallium appearing near Xellos is also cool. And the blonde hair lady afterwards is also Zellas, I think.

And on top of that all, the song is amazing. Both by the music and the words that are so true. I especially love the part 0:50 - 1:04. It goes with "I'm not afraid of getting hurt, but I'm not strong either. it's just that I can't stand just doing nothing anymore". That is so beautiful and fits the Slayers perfectly. Lina is not super overpowered. She is strong, of course. But even she can't easily defeat just a mazoku, and then we have Gaav and Phibrizzo. Higher ranks. And they outclassed her totally. But she can't just do nothing, otherwise she can lose her friends (like Gourry for example).

That's why I love this opening. Hayashibara Megumi has amazing voice and all her opening are great. She is a voice of Lina too. As well as Anna from Shaman King. And she also signs opening Shaman king as well.

I was maybe 11 years old.

I like the art style. It's slightly different from most anime.
