iPhone 6 4.7" sapphire display review & scratch test!

The 4.7" Apple iPhone 6 will have a sapphire crystal display. Sapphire crystal is used in high-end watches & camera lenses already. Let's put it through its paces!

This is so great to see sapphire glass coming to the market!

In the testing here though, it's really nothing impressive to not cause scratches with a knife and certainly not with keys.

Even Gorilla Glass can handle such abuse because of Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Metal from the knife and keys is not hard enough to cause any real damage, if any scratches at all... I've seen light scratching on gorilla glass from sharp objects when I REALLY applied pressure but is it the glass that is scratching or the oleophobic nano coating? If anyone knows, I would LOVE to hear about it.

To show the true durability against scratches with sapphire, sandpaper needs to be used.

To elaborate a bit, sand and grit are what normally cause the scratches on our displays. It's everywhere!
The mineral hardness of regular sandpaper is the same as or greater than gorilla glass, so it will scratch it. Sand/quartz rates at a 7 on Mohs scale.

Sapphire is at a 9 on Mohs scale. Actual sand should NOT scratch sapphire; however, I bet you that a piece of silicon carbide sandpaper will scratch the hell out of it. ;) it's incredibly hard on Mohs scale!

Also, I would like to see it dropped on gravel with the weight of a phone tacked onto it. While very resistant to damage, sapphire is brittle. A hard impact on gravel should still break it.

I would love to get my hands on some of this and apply my torture tests! Wahahahahahha!

My question now is if Sapphire is brittle, can it handle the bending seen here? Is Apple using some kind of a laminate to help with the durability?

that embarrassing moment when you look back lol

It was painful watching him test the durability by trying to break / scratch it. But I am so impressed with this technology!

Why am I watching this on a scratched iphone 6?

turns out they did put the sapphire display so thin that it became nonexistent.

I gotta say, this is pretty huge for Apple. Synthetic sapphire is a serious material. If you want to see it in action, it is also the material of choice for grocery store barcode scanners because it is so hard and scratch resistant ... you will not scratch this stuff. I am also impressed with the hardness of current gen Gorilla Glass, but doubt it would stand up to years of being assaulted non-stop by canned goods. Sapphire, natural or synthetic, is essentially aluminium oxide (the same stuff used to produce aluminium) and the third hardest substance on earth. As mentioned below it is most often used in high-end watch crystals, but also has crazy applications like shatter-resistant windows for armored military vehicles and infra-red transparent nose cones for guided missiles! I'm curious how much these panels are costing Apple, synthetic sapphire is also a relatively expensive material. I hope we will also start seeing these panels on Android flagships soon!

I think the reason why Apple hasn't complained much about this video is that he is doing a pretty good job advertising this product. Apple should be paying MK for this skit.

The only reason I use Android is because of the nice displays. I'm pumped to finally come back to iOS for the better apps. itunes radio, find my friends, and game center. The bezels on that front panel looks much better then the mock ups.

So, "Sapphire Glass" is not just a marketing term.  It's, like, actual sapphire!  That's really awesome.  It shouldn't scratch unless you have it in your pocket along with a bunch of diamonds.  But if you have a bunch of diamonds in your pocket, you can probably afford to replace your phone frequently.

Somewhere down the line, some clown is going to say Apple is revolutionary for "inventing sapphire crystal displays"

So it turns out this was a fake :(  ... I guess the technology is too expensive right now. Hopefully the price will go down in the next couple of years we'll actually get this display on an iPhone

If it’s anything like the other apple sapphire..

It will scratch at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7.

This man is a legitimate tech reviewer. Somebody who's worked his tail to the bone to bring us all the news and reviews. Just the whole layout of his videos, from the intro, to his mannerism, to his intelligence. He is talented beyond belief and deserves everything.
