Jacob only made this video to convince his players he doesn't fudge.

0:04 that's an amount of dice Laura Bailey would be proud of.

I am typically against fudging dice rolls, but there was an instance two years ago where we spent a session creating characters with elaborate backstories, then the following session managed to get 30 minutes in before starting a fight with a few goblins. Well, unlucky for the cleric, My first two attack rolls against them were Crits. I let the first one stick bringing them very low, and conveniently bumped the second one off of the "20" to avoid the almost guaranteed kill. Something about killing a character off 30 minutes into a session one just felt dirty to me so, I let my DM knuckle intervention change fate. After session one, it's all bets off.

I just apply the rule of cool: Is my dice roll going to ruin the entire evening/Moment the party is having right now? Yes? Well then a 20 may as well be a 4

*_Jacob:_* “No, I don't fudge my dice rolls.”

*_His players:_* “We want to check if you're telling the truth.” **rolls a nat 20 on Insight**

*_Jacob:_* **rolls a 2 on Deception**

*_Jacob:_*

*_Jacob:_* “I rolled a nat 20 + a modifier of 4.”

PC:*Rolls a nat 20 to kill an important NPC*

The DM that said the roll isnt high enough: *"Reality can be whatever I want it to be"*

I fudge my dice in one and one situation only - I've pooched the difficulty of the encounter. TPK's should not be suffered because I've missed the mark.

Our DM is very transparent with what he is doing, and it kinda adds to the fun of the game. When we see our DM roll a 9 and follow up with "Does a 23 hit?" It makes everyone at the table go "oh shit" same thing when he suddenly says, "Legendary Action" it really helps sell the challenge and/or threat of the situation

I agree, a DM should never fudge a roll but bonuses and dc's are free game.

So, as Puffin Forest said on this topic, "I just won't get caught."

When I told my players that I am the Game Master and I can decide what the outcomes of my dice is, they really took a motivation hit...

It was really the weirdest game of monopoly ever...

Okay, but, at the same time, I will argue to the death that the DM can't "counterspell" my divine smite. Like... at some point, the rules are there so that things just WORK correctly. The book says it isn't a spell, Crawford said it can't be counterspelled because it isn't a spell, and by the logic of it works AS THE ATTACK HITS, realistically there is 0 time to counterspell the smite as a sword is slashing your gut.

I always thought "I'd never fudge dice, I'll be a good DM", but after my wife finally decided to try a game after 3 years if me asking her to try.

We were playing LMOP and she rushed into the first encounter as the stock Elf Wizard, 8 HP. The hiding goblin hit her with a crit, rolled 2 6s + 2. I didnt want to make her unconscious in the literal first seconds of the first encounter. So I took the one 6 so she had only 2 HP left. This not only kept her alive, but showed her that "shit I'm a wizard and I need to not rush in" it was all good

Ah a dice goblin! You like them too because shiny math rock make click-clack sound? Needs the more. All the more.

3:37 …um, using that poll, a larger percentage of seasoned DMs than new DMs fudge their rolls. You have to compare the ratios of the two choices, and that’s how the numbers fall

Everything you do oughta be considered based primarily on how fun it would be, and secondarily how much sense it makes, 55% fun and 45% realism
