I Learned to Speak French in 12 Hours

This is my challenge to learn to speak French in 12 hours on a livestream. I am a complete beginner and have never studied any French before. I have set up back-to-back conversations with French tutors from around the world (including from France, Canada, Cameroon, and Senegal) and I’m going to do my best to try and learn as much French as possible in one continuous 12 hour livestream, which is the longest YouTube allows you to stream and save it as a video afterwards. This video will showcase my raw process of language learning. I’m curious to see how much I can learn to speak conversationally by the end of this video, but I also think this will be a useful 12-hour long French class if you’re looking to learn French from scratch! So come study with me!

If you would like to get in touch with the French tutors I learned with today, here is their contact information in order of when they appeared in the video. Most of them have Italki pages where you can directly book time to learn languages.

Lexi is a good teacher. She talks very clearly and a little slower for beginners and corrects almost every mistake explaining to Xiaoma. She encourages and doesn't let him get stuck when he doesn't know. Xiaoma is already tired after that many hours and I'm sure he learned more from that teacher. Also, the fact to having a neutral French accent is good for learners. Nothing against other French-speaking countries or accents, I lived in Quebec and in Africa. Even for French, if you learn with a NOrthern or Southern accent of Marseille, it will be a bit more complicated to switch to neutral French

As a western Canadian, I learned French in school but my comprehension isn't great and my speaking is poor. Tried to be better at it via DuoLingo etc but just not having much success. Listening to this video is turning out to be a GREAT way to brush up on my French! I'm playing it in the background while I work, and it is so helpful! I'm going to have to see if there are other videos like this on YouTube where new French speakers converse with a fluent French speaker. I can see why Xiaoma chooses this method for learning a new language fast.

Well, I'm french, I've watched all the video (for several days), and I could see how much it was hard for you. Congratulations ! You did it. Amazing to hear the effort you put in each sentence. Bravo !

Amazing man. As a French speaker myself I think you made things way more challenging by having teachers with many different accents and varied ways of pronouncing words.

It’s impressive how quickly he learns. It’s weird though, sometimes he will be corrected the same thing over and over and still get it wrong, but sometimes he just hears it once and remembers immediately.

Thank you for posting this 小马, I've wanted to learn French for a while, and this video not only is perfect for getting started but it gives me insight into how you go about tackling languages when you first encounter them. Merci!!

French basics are simple enough, once you get the gymnastics to get the sounds right. But there are so many bloody exceptions; contextualization and tricky spelling (not to mention things have a gender in French) that it discourages a lot of people ^^

That’s a brutal challenge dude. But well done for throwing yourself right in. I gotta say though, booking different styles of French speakers was a mistake. I speak fluent French (French French) and some of the Canadian, Cameroon, Senegal accents were even hard for me to understand perfectly! I can only imagine for you trying to learn from scratch.

Well done dude!! I’m impressed. Love your content and channel.

It bothered me so much that none of the teachers tried to teach Xiaoma the basic sounds of French until Samuel!! It is the most basic stuff to learn, and you'll only be able to communicate if your pronunciation is good enough. He was one of the best ones, correcting the pronunciation and translating new sentences word for word, very didactic.

But besides that, awesome livestream!! Really interesting to watch your progress after each class throughout the TWELVE hours hahah French is an incredible language.
