Johnny Cymbal sang the high lead vocals and Ronnie Bright of the Valentine's was the Bass Man. A tribute to the deep voices of all the Doo-Wop groups and the little rib (or not) to falsetto singers like Frankie Valli.

That is a truly amazing voice. No songs like that are made today.

1963 was a year with so many unique songs.

This is thee coolest song I've ever heard in my 60 plus yrs of listening to music. Johnny wrote this great song at age 17. Also could do both voices by himself. Incredible.

Johnny did a live version of this just before he died, covering both the high and bass notes parts, he was really enjoying it - as was the small crowd. its on YT

Johnny Cymbal was one of the teen stars from the 1960's & "Mr. Bass Man" was his signature song. But he also recorded some others hit records including "Teenage Heaven", "Cinnamon" (under the pseudonym "Derek"), "Mary In The Morning", "Rock Me Baby" & "I'm Drinking Canada Dry".

The bass man is Ronnie Bright the bass voice in the group called theValentine's, who recorded the Woo Woo Train and Lilly Maybelle. He later performed with the Coasters. Listen to those songs.

He’s learning to sing the way the bass man sings. My be a higher register, but it’s still FUN!!!

Haven't listened to this song in a couple of years. Glad you reacted to it! You guys already know what a great bass singer J D Sumner was (of J D Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, helped Elvis with How Great Thou Art, and many more). You have to have a good bass line in music...it really helps keep the beat.

It would be worth checking out his great song CINNAMON in 68. He used his brothers name Derek on the label. One of my favorite songs ever

SO good to hear this again!! I LOVED it as a 13 year old, there were so many songs like this back then, PLUS what was called "NOVELTY SONGS" like "PURPLE PEOPLE EATER, " "PAPA OM MOW MOW, " "SHEIK OF ARABY, " "BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS, " and doo wop songs (which there was ALWAYS a "BASS MAN", like "BLUE MOON, " "SPEEDO, " "FRANKIE LYMON and the TEENAGERS, " and these songs by the COASTERS: CHARLIE BROWN, POISON IVY, and more. Would love to see you react to some of these gems!
