Searching for Hamburg Paper Mill Ruins

Hidden in the woods along the Wallkill River in Hamburg (NJ), the paper mill was built in 1874 on the site of an abandoned iron furnace.

The Wallkill River was dammed, producing power for the paper mill, which was located close to the railroad that allowed its products to be easily shipped anywhere.

Tissue paper produced at the mill was used to pack Washington apples for shipping.

The mill was purchased by the Sparks Manufacturing Co, in 1895 that built a new retaining concrete wall in front of the dam to strengthen it. By 1900, the paper mill became the Union Waxed + Parchment Paper Co. There were 7 smokestacks which later were taken down and replaced by the large one. The mill survived multiple fires and dam breaks but not the Great Depression. It was shut down and abandoned in 1933.

The pond behind the mill is extensive and the dam was raised 8 feet to create more water power. That pond appeared to be pretty shallow and dirty. I tried casting for pikes over there but no luck.

I search and explore alone ghost towns, historic, abandoned, haunted places in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. My explorations are based on local creepy legends and old maps research and aimed to discover something new in urban exploring.

This video really got my brain running at light speed, as if that's possible. I believe this mill has great engineering significance for it's time. A modern mill for it's day but it's orighinal design would last for only moments in time. I'm thinking the original design was what I would call a Hybrid, using both steam and water for energy. Before this mill was built a water wheel would have been the main driver for machinery. Steam was around when this mill was built but it's use was still expanding. After this mill was built steam became king so a water wheel would be found of little use. I believe this mill to be a bridge between what was old and what was new. This is why I think this mill has great significance pertaining to the evolution of industry. I could go on and on with my line of reasoning but I will stop. Thanks again to Walking Cam for getting this old brain of mine thinking.

Glad to see that you are finding some old photographs.
I know it is awful hard to find such things but with lots of travel and research I'm sure you can find old drawings and photos (albeit years older) for some of these places.
But time is getting shorter to find some of these things.
Good luck and keep posting these places.
Reminds me of my days up there traveling and researching !

Great hike and look at the ruins, so much more interesting when we can see pictures of what it was once upon a time. I watched because the headline caught my eye, we have a Hamburg north of Reading, PA, but I'm catching up on some videos and glad I tuned in. I'm hoping there is a special place in hell for graffiti clowns. Some folks call/think it's art, I never did and I never will. 😀

Hey Girl, another great video and description! Just wondering if you saw any long rock walls there deep in the woods. Up here in Maine and where I am, those rock walls are over 200 yrs old and have stood that test of time. Often put up as property bounderies and also used as rock wall fencing on farms that had livestock. ❤️😊
