Why has the US failed to address the challenge of climate change? The political polarization of climate policy occurs because Democrats and Republicans devalue the other side’s ideas simply because those idea come from the other side. Placing party over policy in such a way contradicts people’s personal beliefs about what it means to be a good citizen.

Leaf Van Boven is a professor of social psychology at the University of Colorado Boulder. He studies the link between social psychology, politics, and policy.
