*pls read I asked my friend who lived in korea for 15 years to translate what Jessi said at **3:13* and she told me "from the context, it sounds like exfoliating skin made her skin soft & paler". *So Jessi meant milky skin as in lighter skin.*

(some ppl in the comments were saying Jessi meant milky skin as something else but as you can see above Jessi literally meant her skin got lighter from scrubbing dead skin cells off)

Aw man I love Twice so this may sound kinda biased but to me I felt like the girls were laughing to play along and not make the hosts feel awkward. You know when you're eating with the whole family and someone makes a joke that makes you uncomfy but you don't wanna cause a scene? That being said, it was definitely a tasteless joke on Jessi's part esp since she grew up in America and could have totally said something positive about darker skin tones instead 🤡

Nothing Tyuzu said was colorist but Jessie on the other hand…… “exfoliate your skin and then you will be as light as DaHuna”
What?!

If you’re a South Asian you know how much colourism is normalized. I’ve never seen a person apologize or even show any sense of guilt after making colourist comments. Like the person could be a stranger, an acquaintance, a teacher or even your own family. It’s THAT normalized.

It's sad how Korean beauty standards relies on Fair skin i hope that kpop idols would enchance their own Skin tone i feel so bad for Tzuyu and Kai they are always called "darkest" members. I think what Jessi said is not colorist tho. Alots of KPop idols bleach their skin or gets whitewashed by media like it's sooo annoying

I don't think tzuyu was trying to be colourist. She said she wants to live with a lighter skin for a day because she's kind of tan. I think she has rights to prefer one thing over the other, but the jessi one was just, wrong. They laughed at the joke but I don't think it was that big if a deal but I do understand how people would be disappointed by that action. Said about tzuyu preferring lighter skin shouldn't make her a colourist, because she isn't specifically saying it's dirty or ugly. Also the 7:14 part was so expectedly unexpected 😂

Colorism is so common in India, that people doesn't even realise how problematic it is.

yk i really dont undertsand asian's colorism mindset like it's so deeply rooted in their brain it just comes outta nowhere and they don't even acknowledge that they may come off as rude... even some tan people like jessi make jokes about these stuff. i'm south asian myself, i have mixed skin tones, , some part of my body has dark spots like on my ankles when i was younger my mom once said "do you not wash your legs properly? its disgusting" smth like that and i remember scrubbing my ankles so hard it became swollen and red. my mom now undertsands pale skin, dark skin bla bla is bullshit but she still sometimes makes jokes and laughs with others making those jokes. it's so frustrating sometimes, i feel like the same thing is with idols they know about colorism and racism, but they just dont know that sometimes they come off as insensitive and ignorant or like it's so deeply rooted in their brain they just cant help themselves

I do agree that Jessi's comment was a bit unnecessary, as Tzuyu already clarified she doesn't really care and just answered a question, however it wasn't colourist just because she said milky skin? In fact, a LOT of people use the term ''milky skin'' when referring to blemish free, smooth and bright skin, like after a nice scrub and facial/body treatment where your skin just glows. There's a lot of different meanings behind the word, and in recent years its used in the skincare community for just having bright skin thats blemish free which would make sense as she was talking about rubbing dead skin cells off which genuinely brightens the skin and prevents blemishes.

Jessi also tells almost every pale idol on the show that they should tan (which imo gets a bit tiring aswell), so I definitely don't believe she loves ''milky skin'' with the meaning you mentioned, as her immediate reaction to Dahyun was that she lacks Vit D referencing to her pale skin, which she also did with some other female idols. To then also tell someone to become ''as pale as milk'' which would be like Dahyun wouldn't make sense as she always comments on paleness of idols. But I'm just happy for Tzuyu to be happy with her skin like hopefully all the other members :)!

Also let's not forget that if this was a translation error then why did Jessi not correct the other guy for saying that darker skin is just dead skin cells????

Edit: I just realized Jessi admitted that she's not "naturally dark" because she said that she scrubbed her skin and it got "milky"

-Jessi wasn’t being colorist, she was just trying to be funny. I honestly don’t think she was trying to give an actual solution (because it’s ironic how SHE is giving skin lightening tips)
-I think Twice laughed because they were all pretty nervous in front of Jessi. There’s one point when Jessi gives Jihyo a massage and it just seems so awkward because everyone looked so uncomfortable from nerves since Jessi is such a big personality. They were pretty much laughing at everything she said

Ah... shit here we go again. An another idol doing this. Aren't we all tired at this point. :/ We should stop treating east Asian country as Homogeneous countries. Even tho Tzuyu didn't did a colorist statement but many idols have did that and we know them so... yikes. Having dark skin myself i ain't changing it any way but infuriates how we are treated especially for our skin color. i mean it's not dirty every skin color is gorgeous. We just have more melanin nothing much.
