Adding a clarifier or flocculant is always the last step in the process. By this stage in the smart step process, your pool water is balanced, well chlorinated, and free of living algae.

So what’s the difference between a flocculent and a clarifier?

It is very easy to confuse them as they both deliver a very similar function. However, each serves a unique purpose.

• A Clarifier is used when the pool water is only mildly cloudy. Clarifier is a chemical substance that binds the tiniest of particles together which are then removed from your pool via your filter system. The chemicals in a clarifier act like a magnet to the fine debris suspended in your pool to achieve very clear, sparkling water.

• Pool Flocculent works in much the same way, however it is generally used when the pool is very cloudy. Pool flocculent thickens the particles in suspension and binds them together, so they sink to the floor. Due to the particles being bigger and heavier, they can not be removed via the filter system and need to be vacuumed to waste.

So when should you use Pool Flocculent or Pool Clarifier?

Pool clarifiers are generally used for pool maintenance while flocculents are used when the pool is extremely cloudy. You cannot use flocculent with a cartridge filter unless you have a waste function.

Flocculents can create problems with cartridge filter elements if used incorrectly and can reduce the efficiency of your filtration. Similarly, with a sand filter, you want to avoid trapping the large particles created by the flocculent in your filter as it will affect its efficiency. Hence, it needs to be vacuumed to waste.

It is also worth noting that when using a flocculent, your pool levels will drop when you vacuum to waste. So next time your pool loses its luster, reach for a Hy-Clor clarifier.
