The German castle that inspired Frankenstein – BBC REEL

Показать описание
Seated high above the Rhine Valley in Germany is the 13th Century Castle Frankenstein. Some believe that the castle, and a scientist who lived there at the time, were the inspiration for Mary Shelley’s book "Frankenstein".

Although Shelley never revealed the true inspirations for her book, this hasn’t stopped visitors flocking to the castle each year to immerse themselves in the legend.

A friend lives nearby and took me to the castle. Very interesting story! He told about the Franks but didn't know about Mary Shelley visit

Mary Shelley her sister and her future husband, were in a rented house on Lake Geneva; Lord Byron was a close neighbor. The weather was awful for weeks, and for fun they had a contest to write the best ghost story. Mary won.

From 1982-1985, we lived in Nieder Beerbach, the village literally in the shadow of Berg -- not "Schloss" -- Frankenstein. I used to hike up there all the time.

Great documentary. However, what is missing in the documentary is that a priest of Nieder-Beerbach - the village close to the castle - approx 150 years ago experimented with electricity to bring dead people back to life. That plus the facts told in the documentary might have been the inspiration for the novel.

I lived in Darmstadt in 86 and 87. I remember hiking up to the castle being very pregnant. It wasn't what I expected. Was hollowed out and crumbling. Maybe they've some restoration since then.

It’s a lovely castle with a beautiful view and lovely little chapel. The history BEFORE all the Frankenstein hype is the truly interesting aspect. Frankenstein simply means “French stone” - nothing more than that.

Terrific short doc of this castle and Mary Shelley.
Read the novel,
FRANKENSTEIN by MARY SHELLEY. It's an excellent novel and quite engaging.

Electricity had much to do with it as it was the latest thing in the early 1800s and quite the talk of the town all over Europe. Mary might have heard of Galvani's dancing frog legs and made the jump to reanimation of a whole human body from the severed legs of dead frogs. However, beware of the Abby Normal brain.

I've been there, though not at Halloween. The castle itself is a ruin, nothing special. But, I've always liked castles and had fun wandering around while my wife sat in the car reading a book waiting for me.

Pn the other hand, I have always been bored by all the fancy palaces of Europe. Forget the Schlosses. Give me a good Burg.
