American ragtime composer Scott Joplin’s “Paragon Rag” was written in 1909, during his New York City period in which he tried to procure enough funding to publish and stage an opera. The Rag was dedicated to the Colored Vaudeville Benevolent Association, of which Joplin was a member, in recognition of its efforts to promote and protect the interests of African-American actors. The piece is in ABACD form, containing five sections with four strains. It begins in G Major, and progressively modulates to C Major by the second to last strain.
