KaptainKristian - Appreciating the Process | Traven Talks

It’s said that learning too much about a magician’s tricks can ruin the illusion, leaving you so hung up on the details of the performance you can’t enjoy the experience, and it’s a sentiment I often see referenced in regards to entertainment in general - that focusing too much on the techniques that make up the sum of their parts will spoil your enjoyment of the whole. But, I’ve always felt, quite the opposite. Understanding and learning about the process that goes into these pieces of art and entertainment usually gives me a newfound appreciation and admiration for the effort and creativity the people behind them pour into it. And . . . I will admit I don’t have a clever segway for this, but you read the title, you know where this is going.

That's right, a video essay about video essays - how meta!

Anyway, Kristian T. Williams, better known online as KaptainKristian, is a video essayist who discusses the history, design and impact of various staples of pop culture, particularly in the realm of animation. He packs so many fascinating insights into the creation of the media we love, where even the tiniest of details can add so much to a work, into these densely edited videos. And today, I want to talk about how and why that appreciation for the process behind said art and entertainment can be just as enjoyable as the experience itself.

Dude I 100% hear where you're coming from. After doing this for a year now, I've gone from being impressed to outright blown away by some of the video essayists on YT. Knowing firsthand the effort that goes into making these is mind-boggling, but it makes me love everything I watch all the more. Great job with this one man, really digging the animation :)

Really good vid, appreciate how you went into detail about how he makes his vids rather than just the end product, unlike another vid I’ve seen.

I know exactly what you mean about how understanding the process can make it more enjoyable. Its the same way I feel being a game developer and seeing how things are put together in other studio's work. Every new trick feels a bit like magic.

Truly a stunning video you got here, it's so _Meta_ how it's a video essay on a Video Essayist.

Eyoo, I've come across a couple of people talking about kk, but this is the first time I've been someone actually open the curtain a bit & show how a couple of techniques are done

Damn, you got my sub! This was a fantastic video man I loved every moment of it and I really like how your video isnt just about KK but actually has a much broader point being made that can be applied to all forms of art. Its something that I want to strive for moving forward with my own videos and its always nice to find another creator who has a similar mindset. The project that im working on right now actually has made me want to start learning after effects to elevate my work, seeing you talk about how achievable this can be is very motivating. If you have time and can spare a couple of minutes to check out what I do I would really appreciate some feedback and honestly would love to make another creative friend.
