Hi. I'm a kiwi living in Bali. I really appreciate the generosity of time and expertise that so many people have brought to this virtual coffee chat - especially Jessica Jackley. I see most of you even made sure you had coffee to make it the real thing. I'm interested in the transition from what you call 'spamming friends and family' to a more sustainable approach and some of the challenges and problem solving that you used to get there. You covered a whole lot of this part of your story on this chat and agree deeply with the idea of having a strong internal compass, reflecting a lot and engaging with people in conversations and friendship over a long period of time. Think I'll end up watching this video several times. Thank you.

Understandably, a lot of the questioning was centered around "How do I focus my students?" and "How do I focus my project?"
People are driven by many different things though i would like to gently direct people to consider, more than social impact, to actually be more mindful of social responsibility when they are prioritizing their focus.
If people are out there trying to do good by the world, then rather than thinking about social impact, to think more so of prioritizing things that will build sustainable communities that work together with other communities very well too.
Jessica did touch on the area of what good does my project to do for the greater good and she then went on to say (paraphrasing a little here) that with time communities will gauge the value of the project and those projects will be the ones that become the most successful.
I personally would guide my students to do their very best to look for projects that will make communities able to stand on their own, water - wise, energy - wise etcetera in a way that they can also self assess themselves so that they know they are self sustaining. But importantly for a program that creates those communities to be friendly to external communities also (as wisely as they can be).
Please do critique this but i feel that projects that don't focus on this general idea are not really pursuing a global goal that has any global community direction and don't have the global community in mind, therefore to look to see if the projects are 'actually' any good I would need to then do other correlation types of analysis to actually see if offshoot projects really are helping the 'global' goal I've articulated here.
