Cinematic Depth of Field | Tips & Tricks | Unreal Engine

Cinematic Depth of Field in Unreal Engine enables you to simulate real-world photographic depth-of-field effects that blur a scene based on the distance in front of, or behind, a focal point. It's not only high-quality and highly performant, it's also easy to use.

In this Unreal Tips & Tricks video, we'll briefly discuss the basic operation of a camera and show how the real-world camera settings are implemented in Unreal Engine. We'll then look at how to add a cinematic camera to the scene and go over the filmback, focus, and lens settings, as well as explaining how to tweak those settings to achieve the required look, including bokeh effects. Finally, we'll see how you can easily visualize your focal plane.

I have been trying to do this simply tutorial, but for some reason when I change the aperture (and I did many tries), nothing changes with the camera, there is simply no depth of field. Any idea why when moving the aperture the result its not visible? thanks

I'm using UE5 with a side-scroller template, there is no "Method" option in Lens. There is only 3 fields. There is also not this "method" option under post-processing, nor in postprocessing volume. Please advise. Thank you.

How to make a tile shift effect using Cinematic Depth? Since GaussianDOF has been removed from the engine.

I'm having trouble with rendering motion blur from sequencer in 4.25. In viewport I see the motion blur just fine but the movie renders without it

Hey @Unreal Engine team !
Thanks for these tutorial series ; as a professionnal Cinematic Artist, i'm looking for a way to tweak the bokeh shape into something that looks more like an anamorphic oval. I've tried the "Advanced Depth of Field shape", but that does not seem to have any effect on my bokeh. Any tips on that ? :)

4.26, the depth of field options are missing. Are they moved?

That's cool. Well presented. Please create a workflow for mixed reality using the HTC vive tracker. I'm encouraging my students integrate the system into their video projects. We are not in competition with the larger companies that are using tracking systems we can not afford. Unleash mixed reality for the lower end Unreal user.

Im looking to achieve a focal range rather than a focal plane. I have achieved a good focal plane for our hero object. But client wants background character blurred with foreground hero object clear. Problem is that the podium that the hero object sits on is slightly forward of hero object and is blurred. So i would live to achieve a range of focus (near and far) with everything behind blurred. Any ideas?

im seeing alot of posts about DOF not working through translucent materials. My scene is 100% translucent materials, is there a way to get the DOF to work properly?

Could this tool be used for gameplay purposes as well? i.e used as a dslr simulator?

When I update to 4.25 and using this method everything in DOF started to flickering, extremly for meshes using mask material, totally unusable

Is there a way for the focal plane to automatically change to whatever object is being looked at the crosshairs or specific section of your screen? So whatever you are targeting is clear but everything else gets a blur?

dont know why such easy stuff becomes so complex....I try to add depth in third-person controller camera, and the way it works is just take guess and load game change number and guess again....
