Are chorus pedals good? Is the Boss CE-2w worth two or three times as much as the MXR Analog Chorus? Can they be made to sound mostly the same? Will any of these questions be answered by this video?

I had to find out.

This is an informal comparison of the legendary Boss CE-2w with the more affordable MXR version. Both analog choruses, both a beautiful sky blue. But how do they sound?

Great comparison! I had both of these until a few weeks ago. I ended up selling the MXR. I had the CE-2W first and wanted to try the MXR for the extra control. The MXR is a fantastic chorus pedal, but the CE-2W is just THE sound that I would find myself trying to emulate with the 5 knobs on the MXR. Watching your video helped confirm my opinion too because I kept finding myself looking at the screen while you were playing the CE-2W. Just like you though, I had to spend some time with both before I knew which one I preferred. I’m probably going to have to get the VB-2W now as well.

hey!, i got an 1981 Boss Ce-2 (mn3007) great!, the ce-1 great !, but unconfortable big and heavy!, and I bought a brand new Boss Ce-2w, and I really don t like it, sounds is far to be close to the original.
Man, 3 days ago I bought that Mxr and I really love it!. Such a great gem!!.. and the price is soo low!… the best 50yo gift I made just for me!.. MXR!!!!
Ps. Don t make me wrong please!, I will love Boss pedals forever, the Boss Dc-2w sounds awesome too…

Nice demo, man. I've been considering the MXR and the 3rd Dimension, so this is helpful. I love the voicing of the CE-2w, but in the second half of this video, you were able to get these two pretty similar to each other (which was a surprise) though the CE-2w still wins imho. Also appreciate how you explored the more dimed settings. Thanks!

Your comparison really does justice to the MXR. I've seen a couple of other comparisons where I feel like people didn't set the MXR correctly to compare it with the Boss. In your demo I have a hard time saying one is superior, which is an interesting finding!

I have the mxr, and absolutely love it but I just wish that led light was just a little brighter…

Not one time did you do what the MXR does best, which is dial in the knobs in the way that emulates the old boss sound perfectly. That's with leaving the lows all the way down and with the high knob at about 11 o'clock.

They are both good, is it just me or is the MXR a little more subtle, modern perhaps? IMO both great pedals, both blue! Boss has the better battery access, of course, if you're using batteries.

I have the MXR and love it. However it does suck tone when off. If you put a buffered bypass after it, that fixes it. However I do like the boss, it's just that the boss is double the price. I may still get the boss someday. I also find that when the boss is set too high in effect, it is no longer musical for me at least. That's why I initially went with the MXR.

The Boss just sounds so much smoother. And ethereal. But not too strange. The MXR has a metallic harshness. Ok pedal. Love the features. But I need the Boss in my life unfortunately

so I DID listen with headphones on, and I am curious as to your feelings after re listening with your headphones in. Did you like one over the other? I thought the BOSS was quite richer in tone than the MXR.
