When I was in year 12 my step mother made sure I didn't have a calculator, as a result I finished up being able to work out a lot of problems faster in my head than other kids could with a calculator. This made me extremely unpopular!

In Nigeria, we use slippers rather than shoes and our mother's accuracy is always on point 🤣🤣🤣🤣

As a Asian myself and raised by Asian parents... I'd say that I kind of agree with the "no calculator" to an extent. At least until you reach highschool. You really don't need a calculator until highschool where you start getting in to graphing stuff and do whole bunch of trig expressions. Even then, there's alternative methods so most of the time you don't need calculators. You'll need it when you get to uni depending on the math course you are taking. I know far too many people back in highschool who couldn't even do basic arithmetic so I do believe it is important to do things by hand to get that practice in.

I am an Asian and my mom and grandma are exactly the same. For Paper II questions in Maths we are allowed to use calculators yet they constantly stop me even when I tell them that we are allowed to....

Lol I remember when I asked my parents for a graphing calculator for my trig and Calc classes. They came up with so many excuses, like my brain will get lazy why we needed it.
I even showed them the syllabus stating that a graphic calculator is recommended. And they were like, see its recommended but not needed, use your brain it's faster....I didn't know what to say after that...

My mom is a teacher and she doesn’t let me use a calculator because it won’t sharpen my brain. Honestly I’m pretty dumb and forgot basic math back in the 7th grade.
