How Recycled Plastic Bottles Are Building Homes

Conceptos Plásticos is the union of two passions—helping the environment and creating products that can benefit vulnerable populations. With almost 600 tons of plastic waste being thrown away in a landfill each day in Bogotá, Colombia, Oscar Mendez knew that something had to be done. That’s when the idea of Conceptos Plásticos was born. The company uses recycled plastic to build homes for impoverished communities throughout the city, while also teaching the importance of recycling and sustainability. As plastic’s characteristics make it a hard substance to degrade, the houses can last hundreds of years, changing the very fabric of the communities it helps.

This makes so much sense. Plastics are a byproduct that broken down make fantastic building materials, especially if combined with other materials. So much goes to landfills which is a waste and harms the environment. Imagine if each home had a means of converting all of their plastics on the spot into building material to be used for 3D printers and being paid by the government because it saves them money in the long run.

Exactly! Plastics should be used for thing we want to last long periods of time, not for being disposable. This is a great idea, and I hope they're having a lot of succes, if they can, they should go to other countries too.

Great idea!!! Nothing wrong with plastic grocery bags. The problem comes when they are put where they don't belong. Like dumped in the ocean for whales and fish to die from. But don't buy food that is in plastic containers if you have a choice. Always buy food in GLASS containers.

Buena idea para los fundamentos. Los paredes de palstico pueden degradar con el sol directo. Madera es mejor de aroma. Bien Suerte a esta empresa con su nuevos productos de futoro !

It was hard to read the subtitles at times, try giving the subtitles an outline.

This is a really great idea, and there is plenty of plastic waste all over. if we can take it and process it like this, turn it from pollution into a resource, recycling rates will soar! And finally a great startup from Colombia and not yet another San Francisco Unicorn

Excelente!!! Sólo falta que mejoren las condiciones de trabajo de sus operadores, portan cargas sin máquinas que los ayuden, hay mucho que mejorar de ese lado.
