You are 100% correct brother. I once painted a bathroom door in an old house with SW Emerald trim and when it dried i couldnpeel it off im strips. I had to strip the whole door and then scuff and prime it with zinsser oil primer before repainting and it came out perfect. It even hid some of the old nicks and scuffs. Good info!!👍👍

45 yr painter here. You 100% can paint over oil. Needs to be thoroughly sanded.

I have one exception.
In a garage there was some water stains on the ceiling from an old water leak, I applied pro block primer interior oil based, the next day I sprayed the ceiling with premium ceiling paint, the oil primer shined right threw the topcoat meaning you could see all the primed areas shining right threw the ceiling.

Hey great information. I’m redoing a room that had some staining so I called Zinsser support and they recommended using the oil based Cover Stain. I used a Wooster 3/8 nap roller and got horrible orange peel. After doing some research I didn’t realize that Cover Stain came in multiple formulas I used the low VOC forumla because that is what is available in my area. Upon research I see that a number of folks experienced the same orange peel. I am now in the process of sanding the walls and ceiling so far the sanding appears to be work but it’s taking a lot of effort. I feel the walls will need another coat of primer. So is it possible to paint over the oil based primer with a latex based primer. I intend on using the SW Problock latex or should I be doing something else.? Sorry for the long comment

Thank you! I am not able to physically sand, etc. the awful paint job inside my kitchen cabinets, so this really helped me decide to use an oil based primer inside to make the new latex paint have a slightly better finish. It won't be as perfect as it could be, but I can do it and it will be better. Praise God my cabinets are full of good things, so it won't be a real eyesore:)

Ok I painted table with oil primer. Used a water based paint. I’ve sanded between coats, and it looks good and feels ok, until all dry, then it’s all bumpy again! Any idea what is happening?

Thanks for the reassuring tip. I have these two metal blueprint drawers I would like to repaint. I was thinking of using Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer and topping it off with Behr Direct to Metal paint PAnother thing i was thinking was to first layer with Clean Metal primer than layer it with Kilz water based primer and adding the Behr paint and sealing with 2x Clear Satin. I don't know man, you think that would work? Thanks!

Great video! Now, what can I do about the latex paint someone has used to paint over the existing oil-based paint on all the trim in my house?

Here in the UK, you most definately CAN paint Water based over oil based paint as long as the old oil based paint is a few months or more old and it has been sanded very well without breaking through.
I have done it many times for paying customers and even in my own home, As i like to keep an eye on what my products look and last like after time.
All my own woodwork is Water based gloss over oil based gloss and 2 years later still looking fresh and unmarked🤷🏻

Can you apply water based primer over OLD (25+ years), oil based paint then paint with epoxy. It's for a driveway with stamped concrete. Thanks

I just put oil base rustoleum on some older, somewhat rusty panels. I'll wait 24 hrs to put a Benjamin Moore acrylic paint. Should I scuff the rustoleum or is it unnecessary? Ty

I just bought a house that I’m remodeling. Whoever painted last used latex paint over oil based paint on the trim. It’s peeling in spots. Do I need to strip all the latex paint off before repainting? I’ve peeled the paint off where it was peeling bad. Just wondering if I need to do all the trim or is there a primer or something that will stop it from peeling everywhere else.

Other information out there suggests the only water based product that can go over an oil based primer is a water based primer. So water primer on oil primer. Is this just a recommendation?

What are the potential consequences of using a water based paint on top of an oil based primer?
