TikTok ban is not ‘frivolous legislation,’ has strong bipartisan support: Pangaea Policy founder

A bipartisan bill to ban TikTok has a fighting chance on the Hill, Founder of Pangaea Policy Terry Haines told Yahoo! Finance Live. The legislation, backed by Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and Senate Minority Whip Senator John Thune (R-SD), has the support of two "veteran lawmakers," who Haines says, "are not putting frivolous legislation in the hopper" and are known for getting bills passed. TikTok has been the subject of numerous security concerns from lawmakers who fear that the app could be used to collect sensitive information from American users. The app's CEO Shou Zi Chew is set to appear before a congressional committee later this month. But this legislation goes beyond Tiktok says Haines, as national security threats stemming from China are among the top concerns facing the White House. Sen. Warner told Fox News Sunday, “We have never had a potential adversary like China... we are in a competition not just on a national security basis but on a technology basis." Sen. Warner's point is well taken, says Haines. It's important the U.S. focuses on "something more systemic to make sure that our technology is not infected or compromised in any way."
