How the Arizona Diamondbacks Rebuilt but Stayed Competitive | Stat Stories

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost Patrick Corbin and AJ Pollock in free agency and traded Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke within the last two years. Despite this, they have remained competitive and have a top farm system. So how did this happen?

In this video, I look at how the Diamondbacks attempted to be competitive in 2016 by making some aggressive moves, including trading Dansby Swanson and Ender Inciarte to the Braves for Shelby Miller. Their poor 2016 season, saw Dave Stewart and Chip Hale fired from their roles as general manager and manager respectively. Mike Hazen and Torey Lovullo were brought in as their replacements and had a mess on their hands.

The next season, the team performed drastically better, but rather than be super aggressive, the Diamondbacks new management had a plan for long term success. By signing quality players to good contracts, and receiving prospects in trades, drafts, and amateur signings, the team is much more balanced and has a top notch farm system.

I’d love to see a video on how complete a player Zach Greinke is. Best hitting pitcher and fielding pitcher in baseball, and he’s even stolen 9 bases in his career! Not to mention he’s a very good pitcher. If you want to make this more broad you could talk about some other guys who fit this mold of player like Greg Maddux. Love the videos!

Credit where credit's due. Even Andrew Friedman recently applauded their competitiveness in recent years and looking forward to the future

Aye OHB getting sponsored, looks like you already mastered the art of the segue. As for the diamondbacks, it looks like they have mastered the art of trading away key pieces while remaining competitive, something many teams can’t seem to do correctly.

The D-Backs are definitely going to be one of the more interesting teams to watch in the future. Thanks for the video!

I love the d backs but it pisses me off that we are in the same division as the Dodgers. We just got to hope for wild card baseball which sucks since the NL constantly getting better, like Mets, reds, Padres, cardinals

Did anyone here watch when Arizona and Philly set the record for most homers in a game last year in a 13-8 win at Philly.

You should make a oakland a’s one, how they came out of nowhere in 2018 and have a line of young prospects that are major league ready!

Love the video! Great job highlighting so many of the up and down transactions the D-Backs have been a part of in recent years!

It'd be interesting to see how the DBacks season would fare with the new acquisitions. By the way, would you do a video on Jose Fernandez, and what he could've been if he didn't unfortunately pass away in September 2016?

"Expectations were low for the D-Backs, so of course they would be one of the best teams in baseball in 2017." Love it.
