A USA Today column points to one factor that may have prevented Caitlin Clark from the women’s national team: how the former Iowa star’s fans would react to her playing time in the Olympics.

Clark's playing time would have likely been limited. She was invited to the national team's training camp in April, but due to the Iowa Hawkeye's success in the women's final in the NCAA tournament, she was unable to attend. Shortly after, Clark was selected first overall in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

This decision to deny Caitlin Clark now and have her wait 4 years more makes the USA look so dumb! If you put jealousy, and pettiness aside, it’s really a no brainer! Clark should be put on the roster. ESPN reports that including a WNBA rookie on the Olympic squad is far from unprecedented: The United States did it with Taurasi in 2004, Candace Parker in 2008 and Stewart in 2016. And in the year before the WNBA launched, Rebecca Lobo was included on the 1996 Olympic team after graduating from UConn in 1995.
