A woman who was walking her small dog was forced to fend off a coyote after the wild animal chased them down.

After several coyote attacks, Niagara-on-the-Lake residents are calling on the town to do more to keep people and their pets safe from the wild animals who are becoming more aggressive.

Tim Balasiuk saw it all unfolding as he drove by. "As soon as I saw it pick up speed noticed it was stalking something," Balasiuk said.

Balasiuk saw it chasing a 10-month-old puppy, Charlie, so he tried to put his truck in the way but that didn't stop the attack. "I was able to get out and intervene as the coyote was trying to lunge at the girl to get the dog."

Charlie's owner and her daughter are too upset to go on camera, but they both credit Tim with saving charlie's life. "I'd like to think it's what anybody else would do I'd hope anybody would do the exact same thing," Balasiuk said.

Charlie wasn't the first dog targeted, Joe Interisano said two weeks ago his son was walking their dog at 7:30 in the morning to get coffee when he was chased and attacked by a coyote.

Luckily in both cases, the coyotes were scared away.

They need to find out who is feeding the coyotes. Their behavior is spot on to someone directly or indirectly providing them food.

That would be absolutely terrifying, I have mini dachshunds and when I lived in Michigan with a patch of woods behind me, we never left our dogs outside alone…someone was always out there with them…I’m in Georgia now and still won’t leave my dogs outside alone…and when or if they go for walks, we carry pepper spray and a knife….

Another reason why people should get a normal size dog that can help defend against attacks like these.

Notl is a farming community and the humans stole their land, this is part of the process of urban growth….glad everyone is safe.

Very healthy looking animal. Looks like outside blood in it. Possibly dog. The white legs aren't typical. Usually they are tan or almost yellow. I have lots around my place in Peterborough. Last year a red one with it's normal coloured sibling was stalking game on my land. They leave me alone and I leave them alone. They are after the rodents and I appreciate that. The trouble is people actually feed them. Those fools are the real problem. Takes the fear out of the yotes and that's when the problems start.

Open season for coyotes. $10 dollars per head. End of the problem. ...Elect me as your next Mayor, I know how to resolve problems. Next please?

What I actually saw was the man that intervened and saved her. The media has to make womaen look tough as much as possible.

We’re animals, who decides where our territory is? Any place we live even New York City can be called “ their territory “! In the country where they are shot on sight they flee at the slightest scent of a human! The reason grizzly bears are not in most states that after a killed someone’s loved one the community shot them on site. The favorite food for coyotes in the California suburbs has been for fifty years pets. When they are not hunted they don’t fear humans .
