These birds have straight up smashed my winter depression. Winter work hours are frighteningly lean, so a cheap hobby lately has just been walking. I walked out to a little peninsula nearby (Belle Island, Kingston), and these little guys started following me. I didn't believe it till there were like 5 of them; one nearly flew into the side of my head. I put my hand up, to see if they'd land on it, and immediately one did. I didn't even have food, it warmed my heart. I've gone back about 6 times now, with seeds, and they always eat them out of my hand. I've seen another group feeding them, having a blast.

They're just so charismatic. Now I've upgraded to suet. I hope to see a chubby gang of birds by spring. Thanks to them, I'm walking way more. Getting my audiobooks in. I'm even making sure I wake up early on my days off to have enough daylight for the walk. I'm also noticing the nuthatches and woodpeckers getting more familiar with me. These chickadees are converting me to a full blown bird nerd. Never saw that coming. Thanks for teaching me about them!

I love chickadees and am glad they stick out the winter instead of migrating. It helps us humans get through when we see them!

The Plains Indians, when asked which of all creatures is bravest, answered, "Not the wolf, not the grizzly, not the bison. It is Chickadee, the tiny warrior who stays through the worst of winters, though he could fly away, and he remains cheerful and positive regardless of all hardships."

My brother-in-law's favorite bird. He was a biology teacher and huge birder. Ranked 3rd Audubon Society of Michigan. Traveled all over the world. Banded thousands of birds. Managed a bird refuge. Etc. And this little bird was his favorite.

I teared up when you said their survival rate in winter doubles with access to feeders. ;__;
I need to refill mine tomorrow..

My great grandma would literally have chickadees and chimpmunks eating out of her hand. Even as a kid, I was speechless. Her name was Honey.

Best fact: My feeding them actually helps their winter survival.

By far my favorite bird. The other day I walked past a feeder I recently filled and was suddenly surrounded by dozens of chickadees flying all about me. I stood very still and just absorbed the magic.

I keep my feeders filled with black oil sunflower seeds all winter long so they can stuff their little faces to their heart's content :) I see many every day.

Birds are simply wonderful and they especially love having a bird-bath that's kept clean.

The name alone is one of my favorite things about them. When I finally looked up the bird with the cute name I'd heard for years, I was not disappointed. And I thought it was fascinating that when the two kinds of chickadees mate, the offspring's call is an even split between the parents' calls. Usually in nature you don't get that perfect split between parental traits but it's like the birds can't choose which parent to copy so they just split the difference.

Hi Leslie! You know what? I have 3 bluebird houses in my yard and plenty of feeders. I didn't mind one bit when a chickadee family took over one of my bluebird house! I love to hear them sing!! So lovely!! I will take your advice and be careful to feed them all winter!!! Thank you Leslie. I am a subscriber and love your channel. I too love birds - I think they're God's most lovely

I just watched this, Lesley. Awesome. I love my chickadees. They eat everything (nuts, safflower, sunflower, etc). They definitely "know" me and know my voice/inflection. They will fly and sit on a branch not more than two feet from me. I make sure that all of "my" birds have plenty to eat; especially during the winter. They are awesome birds. My feeders are always full.
