g’day to all the NFL viewers coming here learning what a hip drop tackle is

I'm not a rugby fan but an NFL and college football fan. This is getting a lot of attention in those sports right now, but this is the only video I've seen that actually explains the infraction. Thanks!

Had to come here to understand what ismgoing on in the NFL right now. Well explained video.

I’m going to love watching next week and seeing refs completely abide by this interpretation without any issues whatsoever.

Send to all your NFL fan friends who think hip drop means any tackle from behind

Honestly this looks more like a move for apprehending suspects than a fair sporting move

The NFL needs to make a video just like this to explain their new ruling.

This explains the technique very well.

I'm having trouble with the 2nd element or indicator, because frequently the rotation is initiated by the player with the ball, and the tackler is just hanging on. Suppose I have a hold as described in element 1, and the ballcarrier starts twisting away by rolling *into* the side I came from. My head is pressed against the ballcarrier's back as we go down; I can't see where my weight is landing in relationship to his legs. Seems like it'd just be a matter of luck as to whether I come down primarily on the ground (not a violation) or on the side of one or both of the opponent's legs (a violation). (NB -- I've never played League, only Union, and that was decades ago!)

So is the ref that was reffimg the Broncos v Storm game going to be held accountable for any of the shocking calls he made? That Carrigan tackle was so clearly not a hip drop that you used it as an example of "what not a hip drop is" and the olam falcon no try call. Seriously it was horrendously called that game.

I'm here as an AFL fan. Never heard of it until the Aaron Naughton injury.

Best explanation I has seen. Thank you

why was patty sin binned then, if it was NOT a hip drop...?

I hope this is playing on repeat for the refs. Seeing you use Patty’s tackle as an example of what it isnt knowing he spent 10 in the bin for his tackle and impacted the game for the Broncos.

The clarification was needed, and the referees needs to see this. Sin binning for this is understandable to stamp out this practice. But sin binning for other offenses like the Hebie Farnsworth sin bin for impeding a chaser who clearly flopped. Giving out sin bins like candy is getting out of hand and is ruining the game. And players flopping to get a penalty should be stamped out too before the game turns into Soccer.

I expect an appology from the referees governing body

What about players who have been swung unintentionally after they have the initial grab.

Look at the Carrigan tackle and explain to me what part of that motion he made outside of the initial grab was intentional in any way?

Had he land on Nelson with his full body weight under what was claimed it would be considered a hip drop even though he didn't have the ability to do anything other then take a ride.

So basically as long as you don't land on the persons leg and cause pain/injury it isn't a hip drop tackle?

All defensive players need to learn from this video and learn the legal way to tackle as shown on this video!

What's the danger being addressed by outlawing this technique? Is it ACL injuries by forward force against the leg below the knee? Or is it the problem of leg bones being pinned between points on the ground while experiencing pressure in the middle?

Also, what if the element of "twist" is missing because the tackler is *already* behind the player being tackled?

If there is enough of a size difference, there's situations were the ball carrier swings the defender around... I think they should restict it to 3 in the tackle. If its a 1 on 1, and the guy is literally getting dragged along - what is the defender to do? Let go and let him try?
