Chinese stock markets drop amid widespread lockdown

China's major stock markets plunged yesterday as investors started to count the cost of locking down more than 50 million people, according to Sky News business reporter Edward Boyd.

The COVID crisis in China is raising serious questions about President Xi Jinping's ambitious economic growth targets, and it is uncertain they will be achieved.

The Chinese economy is expected to grow 5.5 per cent this year as announced by President Xi earlier this year, but the nation’s COVID zero strategy harms economic growth.

If the economy does not rebound, it puts President Xi’s attempt at a historic third term in doubt.
