Hey Everyone,

Let’s take a deep dive into Stephen King’s newest short story collection “You Like It Darker”.

In this video I’ll take you through each story and let you know what I liked, disliked and even talk about some of the connections these may have to the Multiverse.

Enjoy!

Danny Coughlin was absolutely the best story King has written in YEARS.
Like you - I just could not put it down.
Incredibly gripping- with one of the scariest and most relentless villains King has ever created.
Whenever that detective showed up I got every bit as nervous as Danny did - and when an author can make a reader genuinely feel exactly what their character feels - that’s just GREAT writing.
The entire book was just terrific and a real return to form for King.
As much as I’ve loved many of his long novels - I think his short story and mini Novella collections actually feature some of his very best writing and ideas.
Sometimes - especially in a lot of his recent work - he tends to get carried away with over long back stories and goes off on long winded tangents too often, bogging the story down.
His short stories, by contrast, are usually lean and mean - moving quickly with none of that extra fat on them.
This really is his best book in a very long time - as well as one of his very best short story collections ever.
Great review!

I really do appreciate your reviews. What I appreciate most is how authentic they feel, I don’t feel like I’m listening to somebody who is obligated to do a review, you’re doing it just because you want to, and that makes it a lot more authentic in my opinion.

Also, I’ve screen grabbed your book reviews from the past for my record, and I have not been disappointed by any of them. I look forward to more of those coming out when you get the opportunity.

One more sidenote, I like that you pick up some books based on their cover alone, and not knowing who the author is. Or at least, I’ve seen you do some of those in the past on your reviews, and I do the exact same thing sometimes at used book stores. I end up finding some authors that I really enjoyed just on the cover alone. So it might be fun to see you do more of those in the future.

I remember reading where some of these stories were published before, but can't remember where, sorry! But great review, I'm with you on most of these stories. Stephen King story collections are my favorite King.

Thanks for the review, Jimmy! I'm not a big fan of most of King's more recent books, but this one sounds like one I might enjoy. I'll give it a chance.

Will have to get around to reading this one. Sounds a good collection. Nearly got it the other day, but I gor The Institute instead. Really enjoying that. Great channel!

Song of sussana had a scene reflecting the fifth step. A night shift story does also

The fifth step was apparently published in a 2020 issue of Harper’s magazine!

So far, im really enjoying this one! Im only a couple chapters into "Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream". "Willie the Weirdo" totally gave me classic King vibes! The twist (spoiler alert!) reminded me of one i cant remember atm, but it was when Grandma made a deal with an Eldritch Creature to have kids and then possessed the grandson. I reread Skeleton Crew like a year ago lol.
Edit: the story is called "Gramma" lol

Thanks for your enthusiasm about this book. I remember you not liking Holly very much. I’m forgetting the other one you were disappointed in. I had been on Stephen King burnout for awhile after Fairytale. I did like The Institute though. I enjoyed Duma Key. I enjoyed being out of Maine for that one.
Thanks, Jimmy
Also, The Answer Man sounded like I had read something like that before. Sorry for the long comment😊

Great review. I haven't read this book yet, but it's on my list and I'm looking forward to it. I looked up "The Fifth Step" and it was originally published in 2020 in Harper's Magazine.

Loved Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream and The Answer Man the most. The Answer Man gave me strong Revival vibes. I wish that one were also a full length novella like 'Coughlin's Bad Dream

Such a beautiful afterword. Nice job with the video! I just put this book on hold at the library. I'm reading IT now, my first Stephen King book. It's so funny I never read him...
I read Camp Damascus last year and someone said Chuck Tingle writes like Stephen King. When I told her I'd never read him she was like "you have to!" Well here I am, and I'm not regretting a minute of it!
