Film Scoring Tutorial: How to use analog synths live to score and how to fix the mistake of doing so

This is a walkthrough of the score the film Killer Of Men, available on Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and many other outlets. Since the film is coming out today, I wanted to do a walkthrough, because my initial draft for this film was just a live performance that the director loved. I have to figure out how to unravel and mix a two track improvised performance and recreate it for a more controlled mix that could be adjusted to film edits. When you write film music, there is no right or wrong way to approach things, and this is an example of just performing live on analog synths and reacting to the visuals.

I used a Moog Grandmother, an OB-6, an ARP-2600, a Make Noise Morphagene, an Ensemble Oscillator, a Monsoon, and a CS-L oscillator to make all the sounds for the first track.

To see the film:

I hope this helps you learn something about how to approach film music from an analog synth perspective and how to organically create music based on the visuals.

Really great stuff. I am amazed at how you master your tools… improvising then re-creating it is like reverse engineering inspiration.

Killer video. Loved seeing how you remade the live performance piece by piece. Goes to show you really have to know your way around the synths before you start putting them in just in case you get asked to start remaking a cue! Ha
