Why do wet dogs smell?
"Molecules have to leave the smelly objects and get to your nose through the air and that means that these molecules must be very small and volatile."

Dogs stink whether they're wet or dry.

Cats do this thing called grooming, that makes them not reek.  And they also bury their poop... instead of eating it.

The natural smell of a dry dog makes me want to vomit. Every dog I've encountered stinks...and the owners are oblivious to it. Crazy.

After I wash my dog, I finish the rinse with a small bucket of baking soda and warm water. it's nearly 100% effective.

My three year old Border Collie/Lab mix has never smelled like wet dog. I think the reason is that since we got her we bathe her regularly and keep her clean in between baths.

So we are hearing about your Favourite hypothesis, and not the one most supported by scientific data?

Between baths I will spray my dog with Cedarcide. It isn't harmful to her, kills any fleas she may have and smells like a cedar chest!

Damn d news. Wet dog is not a good smell but certainly not the worst smell out there. If this is such an issue for you there are very simple and in no way expensive methods to correct this problem. Wash your dog once a month after you rinse the soap out rub vinegar into its fur let that sit and rinse again. When you wash its bedding again vinegar added to the wash will take the funk out. If you didn't come across this in your research then I question your methods. Also if your dog has an oily coat you can make a dry shampoo out of baking soda and corn starch that will remove excess oils from the coat.

To be fare, I've lived with and never been without a dog since my birth in the late 50s. Always had dogs in twos and threes. I wouldn't notice.

Hi, I like both dogs and cats. I have had many of both and if not maintained properly they both have the propensity to smell bad. As domesticated animals the act of keeping them clean is solely for our benefit. In the wild it was a natural part of their physiology. It's not their fault, it's our responsibility for bringing them into our homes as pets. Thanks.

I'm sorry I don't take advise from people who willingly identify themselves as a "cat person"

My dog didn't smell much of "dog" at all. There was sometimes a slight odor in some situations, but not as much as other dogs I have had a whiff of. In the rain, my dog smelled a bit like wet newspapers. :P

I get rid of the wet dog smell very easily.
step one: find wet dog
setp two: insert wet dog into microwave and close the door.
step three: press start button (most newer microwaves start automatically with a set timer of 30 seconds) keep pressing start about 20 or 30 times and it will add 30 seconds each press.
step four: you're all done and your dog is no longer wet!
