The solar system has a diameter extending up to the outer edges of the Oort Cloud, estimated to be about 2 light-years, or nearly 19 trillion kilometers (12 trillion miles). This vast boundary encompasses the Sun, planets, moons, and smaller celestial bodies, as well as comets and icy objects in the farthest reaches of the Oort Cloud, which marks the outermost part of the Sun’s gravitational influence.
In contrast, the Tarantula Nebula, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way), is one of the largest and most active star-forming regions known. Its diameter is approximately 1,000 light-years, making it about 500 times the diameter of our solar system. This nebula is a giant molecular cloud of gas and dust, stretching across space and giving birth to thousands of young, massive stars.
To put it into perspective, while our solar system is vast on a human scale, it is minuscule compared to the Tarantula Nebula. The Tarantula Nebula's immense size and high star formation activity make it visible even from Earth, where it appears as a bright spot in the night sky when viewed from the Southern Hemisphere. Its scale highlights the incredible diversity of size in cosmic structures, from planetary systems to colossal nebulae.
