Hello Folks!

I hope I find you all well. Tonight I'm making Rumbledethumps! You may not have heard of it before...It's a traditional dish from the Scottish Borders.
The main ingredients are potato, cabbage and onion. Similar to Irish colcannon, and English bubble and squeak, it is either served as an accompaniment to a main dish or as a main dish itself. It's so tasty....and a wonderfully filling comfort food!
There aren't really any set quantities of the individual ingredients, it's really a matter of personal preference, but I've listed below what I've used here....incase you want to give it a go!
You can add all sorts of things to this to suit your own taste and dietary requirements.

-Cheryl x

Serves 4 (depending on portion size)

5 -6 Good sized Potatoes - I used Maris Piper, a dry floury potato is best!
50g (1.7 oz) Butter
1 Tablespoon olive oil
2 Spring onions, sliced
2 Good handfuls of grated cheese - I used mature Cheddar
Half a head of cabbage, shredded
200g (7 oz) Shredded ham - I used smoked ham hock
1 Large onion, chopped

This would work well for a church potluck. My husband doesn’t care so much for casseroles.
Listening to your lovely (but clear) accent is such a pleasure.

American here — I think this looks absolutely fabulous, and I’m going to have to give it a go — but if truth be told, I’m equally enchanted with that lovely Scottish accent of yours. So beautiful!! Sending blessings from the USA!

Looks so good! I’m from KY and have some Scottish ancestry. This dish would fit right in with dishes my granny used to make. I’m gonna make this for my mom. Thank you!

This is comfort food at its finest. I love the idea of browning the cabbage well. All that wonderful caramelization and flavor! Looking forward to preparing it.

I've made this with a shredded chunk of leftover corned beef. Yummy.

I love Rumbledethumps. I always serve it as a main course with some ham added in, alongside a green vegetable like broccoli and some roasted and buttered carrots. I love the idea of bringing the veg almost to burning to get some nice roastiness; I'll have to try that!

American here: I think I've found a new comfort food! And you're correct, it wouldn't taste the same without charring the cabbage 💜

I love rumbledethumps! Pure comfort food goodness. If you add ham, it's a meal in itself.

I'm want to make this just so I can tell my family we are having rumbledethumps.
Also I like cabbage, cooked or in a salad. 😋

I've tried a version of this recipe from a Scottish Youtube channel and it was glorious. I'm now imagining using it as a topping for Cottage Pie instead of plain mashed!

Now that winter is coming to Western Canada, I’m looking to my file of What’s for Tea recipes to fortify many cold nights. Thank you so much for posting.

I also like cabbage and ham soup. The cabbage tastes sweet and adding some black pepper is delicious.

Made it tonight with ham. Charred the cabbage just like you said. Absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much.

We're from Kolkata, India. We spent a month in the UK earlier this year for a holiday. A 9 day Scottish sojourn was over of the highlights of the trip. Since then I've fallen in love with the Scottish accent!! ❤
