The end of the 1980s in the USSR. Moscow school graduate Ivan Miroshnikov fails his entrance college exams and start working as a courier in the editorial office of the Journal Questions of Cognition. Ivan gets acquainted with Professor Kuznetsov’s daughter Katya. Young people belong to different social strata, but despite differences in upbringing, living standards, habits, and goals, they both always have at least one thing in common: the desire for self-expression. A sincere and somewhat sad existential comedy about a perestroika hero remains to this day one of the most popular films in Russia.

A genius wrote this movie script. The acting, the situations, the actors are simply Oscar level.
Great great movie.

This totally changed my perception of Russian cinema in a positive way: a coming-of-age story done in a light-hearted humorous way but ultimately revealing depth and complexity in the lives of youths regardless of their circumstances. Beautifully executed and acted. Btw, I didn't know that Russians could be this funny!

I like this masterpiece so much. But the reality is somewhat sad. I am very young and never good at interacting with people, but from the ending, I could say that Ivan sees his future if he continues going to the army. How could I expect this young boy to say something with Katya's father like :"I'll study, I continue." at least.

Thanks to the person in the ASSA comments that recommended this film. I enjoyed it. The young people did fantastic and it really fit the times. Letting them have some fun at the end to emphasize difference of worldview was a fantastic artistic choice. I think Katya was severely misunderstood. It was not simply a matter of existing in different worlds. Poor Ivan just didn't have the ammunition to keep her interested and poor Katya left Everything for him to figure out, all the way to the End. To hear Ivan resolve to join the military in the end is such a last resort, but an indication that he Realized he needed to be brought down to Earth no matter the cost. I am sure that, just in Dickens' excellent Great Expectations, Ivan and Katya find one another on similar ground when he returns and can live a happy life together full of great stories and real ambitions. Edit: ...but DIFFERENT result from Dickens'' novel. I forgot to say.

Фильм замечательный.Очень легко смотрится фильм, интересный сюжет, неожиданные, иногда нагловатые монологи, но в целом, главный герой оставляет позитив.

If every educational system in every country had as part of its syllabus the watching listening and analysing of other countries films we would all realise we're all alike we all have the same hopes dreams fears and maybe with that realisation we would say no when our leaders try to make war on each other

Not a single half-impressive actor as in all Soviet / Russian movies I've watched so far. But that pair of young actors (Fyodor Dunayevsky, Anastasiya Nemolyaeva, right?) is heavenly gorgeous <3
