The audacity of automakers is never-ending. Mazda says they plan to go more upmarket and focus on "luxury" vehicles, while Toyota expects overall average transaction prices to exceed $50,000 this year and keep climbing! This insanity prompts Ray and Zach to a discussion: what automaker will swoop in to cater to the lower middle class, and will it be Mitsubishi?

I thought the whole point of Lexus was to cater to the high end and Toyota was supposed be mid-market. Looks like they've lost their way blinded by greed.

not only is $50K plus for entry unfair, its absolutely absurd

I love your great dialogue, ray and Zach. I have been priced out of this market. Your honesty is what Americans need to be wary and a savvy buyer.

Facing a major recession bumping prices doesn't make much sense.

This isn't really new for Mazda though. Mazda is a much smaller manufacturer, and they make a lot of their money on the higher-margin higher-trims. It started with the 2016 CX-9's Signature trim. It makes sense from Mazda's point of view because they are selling 30, 000 CX-9s every year, meanwhile Toyota is selling over 200, 000 Highlanders every year.

The only way we as consumers can drive down pricing is to buy a vehicle and keep it for 10-20 years instead of 3-5 years. Speaking from experience, you'll spend less on maintenance than you will on car payments (presuming you have a brand that has a reputation for longevity). Not only that, but pricing will have to come down to attempt to attract those buyers that are staying out of the market longer.

I'm a 67 retired, single women on a fixed income (but with savings) driving an 18 yo Honda Odyssey with 250, 000 miles that hopes everyday Betsy keeps on keeping on, who needs a new(er) vehicle who is scared to death to buy one bc of the prices!!! I want to travel and feel safe and no one will let me. These ppl are killing us!!

I can afford a 60k car but I refuse to pay that for a car. So I just bought a new CX-5 for 31k. I’m happy with that

I don't even want to pay 20000 for a vehicle. Hopefully the used inventory will go up.

Crazy that I’m making almost 3x minimum wage and own a home and yet financially it would put me in a tight spot to get a new XSE Camry with a couple options (like cold weather package)

It would be very easy for Mazda to knock $5K off their base price of the CX-90 to get it under $35K. Remove AWD, offer leather seats, remove blind spot monitoring/radar cruise control. Heck you can probably get it closer to $30K if you remove the V6 and Apple Carplay/Android Auto, push button start, keyless entry. The problem is very few people buy stripper vehicles with no options. Yes you are seeing higher prices, but you also have way more standard features.

A lot of responsible people who make over double that $50k price point annually will still not pay that for a new car. I’m seeing used cars that are also the same price as it’s new version.

Just purchased a new 2023 Subaru for less than 26K. Good value and has everything I need including all wheel drive.

It sucks that they keep raising the prices and the quality keeps going down

$50k's used to be a luxury car a few years ago. It's not even inflation now, it's just plain old fashioned greed.

I am 70 years old and have been buying new cars for 40 years usually every 6 years are so. I have never spent more than 35, 000 for a new car and I do not see me ever spending over that again. I will buy whatever I can for that or less and will never spend more. Yes I can afford more, NO I will not spend more. So I am looking forward to someone picking up the inexpensive new car segment of the new car market.

I haul Toyotas as my bread-and-butter currently. And I’ve watched the Toyota SR trim level creep up. It is now at the breaking point of my budget. I could eek out $30, 000 but I don’t want to. And I’m not financing for six years not in this climate.

If any of the previously 'budget' brands have the interior/exterior design to go up-market, it is Mazda. Idk if it will work out for them, but they are putting out nice products.

We, as the consumers, hold all the aces when it comes to purchasing anything. If I could snap my fingers and not have anyone buy any car for three months, all the manufacturers would be on their respective knees begging people to come to the showrooms and get a great deal! With that said, I think I have a better chance of winning the Power Ball tomorrow without buying a ticket!😂

50k is stupid. If I decide to get another vehicle, it’ll be about 5-7 years old and make sure I maintain it well.
