It was a terrific movie with a great cast. Michael Caine and Robert Duvall are certainly getting up there in age now, while Donald Sutherland just died. Moreover, I didn't recall that Jean Marsh had a role in this as well. She's quite the remarkable lady.

The book is way better, it’s also on audio book in full. There’s obviously a lot which is abridged in the film but I’m surprised that Devlin’s acquisition of the Jeep and troop truck were left out as that’s a particularly grisly encounter. Perhaps too brutal for the screen in its original form it could have been toned down and included as the film is in two parts really with the first half being the set up. There’s also the parachute deployment aircraft pilot Captain Peter Gericke who is shot down by friendly (German) fire on his return. Perhaps most controversially the inclusion of the SS British Free Corps Major Harvey Preston who is attached to Steiner as a native British speaking officer to add plausibility. He is viewed with disgust by Steiner’s group due to selling out his country and heritage also that despite his upperclass speech and bluster he is in reality a coward, a con-man and thief.
