Having bought nearly 100 cars from Japanese dealers, I can say that the bottom 25% of prices tend to be from dealers that are dishonest about the condition, and problems occur. Last week we got a Land Cruiser with a broken transmission, and another Land Cruiser with a foot-sized corrosion hole that was hidden. That was within one week. I have also had a few dealers tell us that the listed price was just to get attention, and they want several thousand dollars more if we want to buy the car. Something like that would be illegal where I come from, but Japan has fewer regulations for companies... especially car dealers.

There's nothing hidden here in this car as you can see with the video and picture set (in the description). I personally think that this car is worth more than we listed it for when considering the entire condition, but I'm not too keen on charging a high price for an inventory car we stumbled into. It wasn't my plan to buy this car in the first place.

Its a good 10k car. I think 14k cdn is a bit steep. Its near impossible to sell accident damage cars in canada unless pictures of the unrepaired car are available and the damage was indeed minor.

Timing can go off when the timing belt is very old or worn out and you put a heavy load on the engine. It can also be caused by an old or defective timing belt tensioner. Or as you said, maybe someone did put a new belt and did it wrong. But I don't think this is the case, they are really easy to do on these engines. And if you check the marks after rotating the crankshaft twice, it is really easy to tell whether it is off or not.
