They did laugh at Christopher Columbus and rightly so. They had very accurate measurements of the size of the Earth for the time, which Columbus rejected. Everyone knew it was round since much earlier. Their ships did not have the range to survive the proposed trip to the East Indies and had it not been for the Americas, they would not have. He still called the native people "Indians" so clearly had no idea how wrong he was or how lucky he had been.
