In this video I will cover step by step process for replacing the molded lead frame and speed sensor on the 6R80 Ford automatic transmission. My vehicle is a 2013 Ford Expedition EL with 5.4L 3V engine and 6R80 transmission.

I was driving on the highway when the check engine light cam on, and my transmission automatically downshifting to first gear and power save mode and I couldn't drive more than 5 mph.

I read the ECM with a scan tool and discovered that the code was P0720 output shaft speed sensor. on the 6R80 transmission case the output shaft speed sensor is inside the transmission case, connected to the valve body by a molded lead frame.

In order to replace the shift speed sensor I had to open up the transmission and replace the entire molded lead frame.

Great job! Hard enough performing some of these jobs...let alone having to film it...

Awesome video! Thank you for sharing. The job seems pretty easy really after watching your video just a little time consuming. Did you happen to look at your old speed sensor and see if it had any metal that had built up on the sensor?

Did you replace the pan gasket? I didn't see a part number for it. Thanks!

Great job, hopefully going to tackle this myself as well. One thing I noticed in your video is that it looks like one of your transfer tubes is missing when compared to Makuloco. Maybe it fell out during the job. If it is working fine, then probably not a big deal, just wanted to let you know.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.Did you have to code or program the new lead frame?

Did you have any issues with lining up the Trans range sensor on the valve body to the trans?

@DIY_or_DIE, did the problem resolve itself after you successfully replaced and reinstalled the parts? I have a 2012 Ford F150 Lariat 5.0 with this same exact Transmission and problem, and I'm seeing if you think it's worth it to bring it to ford to replace, if they warranty it, or if I should just do it myself. Seems straightforward enough, and you made the process seem extremely simple. But then again, you seem very adept at doing these types of things yourself. Watched the entire video, and it wasn't even a follow-along. I was just genuinely interested in what you were doing, and you made it all very informative and interesting. I feel like i CAN do it myself after watching you. I'm just not sure if i should, you know? Lol. I've replaced a lot on my truck myself at this point, and know that it can ALWAYS look easier than it seems. Any insight on the process is much appreciated. Excellent video, and great camera-work for being in such a tight area!

This looks like a difficult repair. Did you get a quote from an auto shop? Wondering what they'd charge for labor. And if it was worth the mess and time.

Would this be the same fix on a p0715 on a 2016 3.5 f150?

Did you have to program the new Molded lead frame. I'm hearing yes and no. I can do the job but don't have the equipment for a program?

I have a 2013 F150 Ecoboost throwing code P0720. Autozone sells the Output Shaft Speed sensor for $63. Will I be fine JUST replacing the sensor, or would I have to replace the entire Molded Leadframe like you did?

How exactly were you able to obtain a new lead frame so quickly if the dealership claimed they were up to 3+ weeks on back order? My wife’s 2017 f150 is throwing a P0722 and I’m willing to bet this is our issue.

Good Job! I am getting ready to tackle this since Ford wants $3500. I missed the extended warranty period by 2 weeks. Is you Expedition running good now?

I have a problem, my transmission shifts very quickly and the speedometer does not match the speed. It is very advanced and the shifts are very bad. Could it be that sensor? It doesn't give me any code, I replaced the transmission and it does the same.

The part is considered recall by Ford. But when confirming with service they say it has no recall. And then the parts guy said I was lucky to get one and it was on back order. Also they did mention the same that it would take weeks to get one through the service department. Something fishy going on
