Saphao/Castle of Beinô. Wonderful and Majestic rock castle in Mizoram, NE India

The Western Region of Siaha in the Southern part of Mizoram boasts of a mesmerizing rock formation that resembles a castle. It is known for its geological marvel whichis a craftsmanship of nature. A true feast for the eyes. Set in the pristine river of Kolodyne, Castle of Beinô is a sprawling alley of rocks about 10 metres high on both sides of the river. The locals believe it to be a cursed castle and has mystical folklores surrounding it. It is said that the River Queen of Spirits inhabits the place acting as an ombudsman. This unfrequented destination must be explored with ones own eyes for its untold beauty to be unraveled.

Though it is not easily accessible during the monsoon season, the ideal time to visit is during the month of February to May. A motorboat can be hired that will cost anywhere between Rs. 1500.00 & Rs. 2000.00 which is quite reasonable. A local guide with a good knowledge of the area can also be hired. The boat journey starts from the village Lômasu to Saphao which is where the castle of Beinô can be sighted. Access to Saphao is via Lungdar( Lôdaw) in Saiha District or Tuidang on the Lai District side. The route to Lungdar is from Kawlchaw to Phura whereas Tuidang is accessible from Lawngtlai via Bungtlang South.

How to get there : It is ……… Kms from Aizawl (approx 12 hrs) and …. Kms from Siaha town. One can hire a private car from Siaha or take a Sumo service upto Phura. It is however advisable to hire a private vehicle.

Where to stay : The nearest lodging facility is at Phura (80 Kms from Siaha) and Tuipang (Kms). One can also stay at Tourist Lodge Siaha.
