This guy is fixing my fear of flying. He sounds so trustable and calmning

the wisks are preventive dispstating the static charge but a real strike is dealt with by conductive skin of wings and fuselage. composite wings have aluminum or copper conductive mesh to carry the current around the plane not thru the planes. planes are certified for lighting strikes, back in 1969 they hunted for lightening as part of the 747 certification program, I was was in the flight test program

Once my plane was struck everyone was so scared but it just shuddered a bit. Thank you so much now I know captain

I learned something new today and I have flown countless times for over 30 years. Thanks Captain Steve, may we all fly safe because of pilots like you.

Friction generated as an aircraft moves through the air can cause a buildup of static electricity. The wick, which resembles a wire, transfers that electricity back into the atmosphere to prevent it from interfering with navigation and communication radios.

Static wicks are used to dissipate static electricity that builds due to air friction and that can interfere with communication and radio navigation.

When an aircraft is hit by a lightning strike, the current enters the airplane at one point and exits at another, typically at the nose, wingtips, and empennage, while the current is conducted through the aircraft’s skin (aluminum or some metal mesh if made from composite) and other conductive paths. During certification, a zoning analysis describes where lightning is most likely to hit.

Static wicks are placed all along trailing edges and not concentrated in these primary lightning zones. Nor do they have the conductive capacity for the high currents encountered during a lightning strike.

I'm a student pilot and I'm obsessed with all this aviation knowledge... Keep up the great work.

Hey captain aircraft avionics here, the static wicks get rid of static electricity. They can help with lightning but mainy there for static buildup. The aircraft bonding keeps thr aircraft safe. A lightning strike will have both an entry and exit point, not just an entry point and then dispersed by the wicks. Fly safe

damage caused by lightning usually can be found at trailing edges and they can be identified by burnt marks and holes..

You’re a great professor of flying. Thanks for educating us frequent flyers!

May not immediately affect flight safety, but definitely cause a bit of headache to the maintenance crew, to locate all the damages and to fix it afterwards. Though lightning strikes are happening all the time.

I've learned more about jet flight in the last few weeks than I did in the first 70 yrs of my life! Thanks, Captain Steve!

1973, I was on a de Havilland Twin going into Hartford and the pilot was looking to avoid a thunderstorm. We got hit my lightning that, obviously, scared the daylights out of everyone on the airplane. We ended up diverting and going to Boston, and a half dozen wobbly legged people walked off the airplane with quite a story to tell.

That is pretty cool. I always thought that those wicks were for aerodynamics.
