1991 F-15E Strike Eagle Air To Air Kill With Bomb Against Helicopter | DCS Reenactment

In 1991 during the first Gulf War Captains Richard T. Bennett and Daniel B. Bakke in their F-15E Strike Eagle scored an air to air kill against an Mi-24 Hind helicopter with a GBU-10 2000lbs laser guided bomb.

I was working on F-15E's as an avionics tech at the F-15 test and development squadron at Edwards AFB when we heard about this. 6 months prior to this, we were up and downloading targeting pods on a daily basis to get the software tested. We were all pretty amazed by the capability of the system prior to the event. It was nice to see the hard work payoff.

Murica was playing in God Mode by the end of the Cold War. Being able to "Precision bombing down" a flying helicopter from an air superiority jet is basically show-off level of technological advantage. Those guys must have felt great going to bed that night thinking "today was a good day, I survived another day in war which is the most important thing....and I put a GBU in an enemy flying tank, that was cool too"

I remember playing Microprose Dogfight once, flying a Spitfire protecting the Dover radar iirc. Was a bit late and the bomber dropped the bomb right when i was shooting at it. Accidentally, while aiming at the bomber, I apparently hit the bomb it had just deployed, and it detonated midair, thus spraring the radar.
I was dumbstruck by the realization the someone at Microprose took the time to actually model the bomb itself and accounted for the possibility that someone could shoot it.

Ever watch We were Soldiers? The pilot called Snake later transferred to Hueycobras, and was shot down when a Phantom dropped a bomb under him as he was flying NOE.

Ever since the Strike Eagle was announced, I’ve been waiting for this exact scenario. Getting an air-to-air kill with a bomb… what a flex.

Remember, this is also the ONLY F-15E air-to-air kill. F-15Es haven't seen much action in air combat.

I was in 3d Armored Divison (US) TOC when the ALO burst in and said, "Holy shit, we just bombed a fucking helicopter!!!" I always thought it was an A-10 that did it. 😉😉😉

I designed this mission a few months ago, but since the F-15E wasn’t out yet I set it up for the Hornet. I was going to update it once the F-15E came out. If I recall from the Smallwood book it was a night mission. Really wish someone would create the KTO terrain 😊

Unguided bombing incoming helicopters battlefield 2? wake Island was one of my fav gaming things of all time. If I recall correctly I peppered them with the main gun just enough for the bomb to take them out immediately but not enough for them to think they needed to jump.

In real life I believe the bomb smashed straight through The Mi-24 Hind, hit the ground, and then yes as you guys mentioned it completely engulfed the entire area in a brilliant explosion!
