Directly across the Bay in San Francisco are two great islands--the tourist heavy Alcatraz and the more remote Angel Island State Park. Alcatraz gets the crowds, while Angel Island is the quiet, deserted gem, a photographer's paradise, home to great hiking, biking, and of course, picture taking.

I’ve done it several times, once on a bike. If you get a chance to go out opening day of the sailing season, it’s magical. We took the ferry over early with a lunch, sat on the side facing Tiburon. It was such a beautiful day, and it was like being on the Riviera. Warning…watch out for poison oak it’s all over the place.
